Tools Required

Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in the Preface section.




1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.
2. Remove the SIR coil. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Replacement .
3. Remove the turn signal switch multifunction. Refer to Turn Signal Multifunction Switch Replacement .
4. Remove the bearing retainer (1) using J 23653-SIR and J 42137 .



5. Remove the shaft lock shield assembly (5).
6. Remove the turn signal cancel cam assembly (4).
7. Remove the upper bearing spring (3).
8. Remove the upper bearing inner race seat (2).
9. Remove the inner race (1).



10. Slide the switch mounting bracket off of the steering column shaft assembly.

Important: The switch mounting bracket must be pressed firmly against the steering column tilt head in order for the screws from the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly screws to line up.

1. Slide the switch mounting bracket onto the steering column shaft assembly.
2. Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only. Refer to Turn Signal Multifunction Switch Replacement .



3. Install the inner race (4).
4. Install the upper bearing inner race seat (3).
5. Install the upper bearing spring (2).
6. Lubricate the turn signal cancel cam assembly (1) with GM P/N 12377900 (Canadian P/N 10953529).
7. Install the turn signal cancel cam assembly (1).



8. Center the race and upper shaft assembly (1) to the 12 o'clock position (2).



9. Install the shaft lock shield assembly (2).

Important: The bearing retainer must be firmly seated in the groove on the race and upper shaft assembly (3).

10. Install the bearing retainer (1) using J 42137 and J 42137 .
11. Install the SIR coil. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Replacement .
12. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.
