Seat Belt Retractor Pretensioner Replacement - Front Impala

Caution: In order to prevent accidental deployment and the risk of personal injury, do not dispose of an undeployed inflatable restraint seat belt pretensioner as normal shop waste. Undeployed seat belt pretensioners contain substances that could cause severe illness or personal injury if their sealed containers are damaged during disposal. Use the following deployment procedures to safely dispose of an undeployed seat belt pretensioner. Failure to observe the following disposal methods may be a violation of federal, state, or local laws.

Caution: When carrying an undeployed inflatable restraint seat belt pretensioner:

•	Do not carry the seat belt pretensioner by the wires or connector.

•	Carry the seat belt pretensioner by the piston tube, keeping hands and fingers away from the cable.

•	Make sure the open end of the seat belt pretensioner piston tube points away from you and other people.

•	Do not cover the seat belt pretensioner piston tube opening with your hand.

Failure to observe these guidelines may result in personal injury.

Preliminary Procedures

Move the front seat all the way forward.
Disable the SIR. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling.
Remove the seat cushion outer trim panel. Refer to Seat Cushion Outer Trim Panel Replacement.
Remove the lower center pillar trim. Refer to Center Pillar Lower Trim Panel Replacement.

Belt Tensioner (Retractor Side) Bolt/Screw

Procedure

Unsnap the upper sleeve from the linkage cover and slide down.
Remove the linkage screw and pull the linkage plate from the linkage covers.
After loosening the screw, push the screw through the hole using the small access hole on the opposite side of the linkage cover.
If the screw does not come out, the cover halves can be separated with a flat-head screwdriver to access and hold the nut.

2	Seat Shoulder Belt Guide Bolt Tighten 47 N·m (35 lb ft)
3	Rear Quarter Upper Trim Panel Assembly Refer to Quarter Upper Trim Panel Replacement.
4	Rear Quarter Lower Trim Panel Assembly Refer to Quarter Lower Rear Trim Panel Replacement.
5	Seat Shoulder Belt Retractor Bolt Tighten 47 N·m (35 lb ft)
6	Retractor Belt Assembly Tip Disconnect the electrical connector.
