This cancels and replaces Chevrolet Dealer Service Bulletin 84-83 dated March, 1984 which should be destroyed.
A new A/C compressor shaft seal has been implemented on all R-4 and DA-6 A/C compressors during the 1984 model year. A new one-piece lip seal has replaced the two-piece ceramic carbon seal. The lip seal is a quality improvement and is anticipated to improve shaft seal field performance. Inspection and shaft seal service must be made as follows:
- DA-6 compressor originally produced with two-piece ceramic carbon seal must be serviced with a two-piece seal (P/N 2724280).
- DA-6 compressors produced with the one-piece lip seal must be serviced with a one-piece seal (P/N 2724319).
- R-4 compressors originally produced with the two-piece ceramic carbon seal must be serviced with a two-piece seal (P/N 12301828) for proper shaft seal function.
- R-4 compressors originally produced with the one-piece lip seal may be serviced with either a one-piece seal (P/N 2724319) or the two-piece seal (P/N 12301828).
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
