SPEEDOMETER CABLE RATTLE (Revised to change number from 87-8-142 to 87-8-180.)
Some of the subject vehicles may exhibit a light rattle sound coming from the instrument cluster area. This condition can occur on vehicles fitted with the two-piece speedometer cable.
For vehicles exhibiting the rattle condition described, repair action is as follows:
Under hood, locate the center connection of the two-piece speedometer cable assembly. Also, locate the section of the heater hose from the water valve (located on dash upper panel, inboard of brake servo unit) that is covered by the thick protective sleeve.
With a plastic tie-strap, strap the speedometer cable to the protected area of the heater hose, locating the tie-strap adjacent to the center-connection of the speedometer cable. Adjust the strap location such that when the strap is tightened the speedometer cable casing (black) is snug against the heater hose protective sleeve and that the center connection of the speedometer cable does not contact the protective sleeve.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
