1. Connect a scan tool.
2. Inspect for engine control diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).

Is the vehicle speed sensor DTC set?

Go to Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls in Engine Controls - 1.6L or Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls in Engine Controls - 1.8L or Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls in Engine Controls - 2.0L

Go to Step 2

1. Turn the ignition OFF.
2. Disconnect the engine control module (ECM) connector.
3. Remove the instrument cluster.
4. Measure the continuity between the control module circuit 817 and instrument cluster connector B5.

Does the ohmmeter indicate the specified value?

0 ohms

Go to Step 4

Go to Step 3

Repair the open circuit between the instrument cluster connector terminal B5 and the ECM.

Is the repair complete?

Replace the speedometer.
