Steering Wheel Inflatable Restraint Module Replacement 2.0L

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 1256126  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Caution: Refer to Sensing and Diagnostic Module Handling Caution in the Preface section.

  3. Position the steering wheel straight ahead.
  4. Caution: Refer to SIR Inflator Module Handling and Storage Caution in the Preface section.

  5. Remove 2 driver air bag module mounting bolts and discard them.
  6. Remove the connectors from the horn terminal and the driver air bag module.
  7. Remove the driver air bag module.

Installation Procedure

    Caution: Refer to SIR Inflator Module Handling and Storage Caution in the Preface section.

  1. Install the connectors to the horn terminal and the driver air bag module.
  2. Install the driver air bag module.
  3. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  4. Install the driver air bag module mounting bolts.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the driver air bag module mounting bolts to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  6. Connect the negative battery cable.

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in the Preface section.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Caution: Refer to Sensing and Diagnostic Module Voltage after Ignition is Turned Off Caution in the Preface section.

  3. Remove the 2 driver air bag module mounting bolts and discard them.

  4. Object Number: 1308839  Size: SH
  5. Remove the connector from the driver air bag module.
  6. Caution: When carrying a live inflator module, make sure the bag opening is pointed away from you. This minimizes the chance of injury in the case of an accidental deployment. Never carry the inflator module by the wires. Never carry the inflator module by the connector on the underside of the module.

    Make sure that the bag and trim cover are facing up whenever you place a live inflator module on any surface. This is necessary to provide a free space for the bag to expand in the unlikely event of accidental deployment.

    Never rest the steering column assembly on the steering wheel with the inflator module face down, and the column vertical. This may result in personal injury.

  7. Remove the driver air bag module.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 1308839  Size: SH

    Caution: When carrying an undeployed inflator module:

       • Do not carry the inflator module by the wires or connector.
       • Make sure the air bag opening points away from you.
    When storing an undeployed inflator module:
       • Make sure the air bag opening points away from the surface on which the inflator module rests.
       • Provide free space for the air bag to expand in case of an accidental deployment.
       • When storing a steering column, do not rest the column with the air bag opening facing down and the column vertical. Lay the column on its side.
    Failure to observe these guidelines may result in personal injury.

  1. Install the driver air bag module.
  2. Install the connector from the driver air bag module.
  3. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  4. Install 2 new driver air bag module mounting bolts.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the driver air bag module mounting bolts to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  6. Connect the negative battery cable.
