Condition

It has been reported that the door frame paint is starting to peel at vertical parts in some vehicles of J200 and U100 which were produced from June 15, 2004 to July 09, 2004. The base coating is all right, but the surface and top coating is starting to peel.

Cause

To prevent the door frame from rusting during the rainy season, rust preventing oil was sprayed on the door frame bare panel. Due to heating effect during the oven processing after electro deposition coating, the rust preventing oil that accumulated inside the folded gap of the door frame leaked out over an electro deposition coating surface. This resulted in poor adhesion of primer and top coating.

Correction

GMDAT has added solvent cleaning process after E-coat oven process since July 09, 2004 and deleted rust preventing oil spraying on door frame since July 19, 2004. For customer satisfaction, the target vehicles should be inspected and re-painted if the door frame paint is starting to peel. Please refer to the following inspection and repaint procedure.

Inspection Procedure

    Object Number: 1559718 Size: SH
  1. Perform the 8 Points inspection with 4 Door frames. See the photo on right for affected areas. The only affected areas (A/B) are about 100 mm from upper 30 mm of door inner welding point.

  2. Object Number: 1559722 Size: SH

Notice: Please do not use a sharp steel knife or the primer will break.

  3. To check paint peeling, scratch or rub along the folded valley of the door frame panel about 100 mm from upper 30 mm of door inner welding point (use something smooth like the head of plus pen or ball pen to prevent damage during inspection).
  4. Repeat the above inspection for all door (2 Points (A/B) per door).

  5. Object Number: 1561214 Size: SH
  6. Perform the repaint procedure in case of paint peeling. If there is no paint peeling, complete the procedure.

Repaint Procedure

  1. Remove the door weatherstip partially for paint spray. Refer to Service Information. If necessary, depending on the area of paint peeling, it is recommended to remove the door trim to avoid heat damage while drying and paint spreading wrongly.
  2. Clean the paint peeling area using solvent.
  3. Sand the peeling area using Sand paper (#600-#800).
  4. Clean again the sandpapered area using solvent.
  5. Mask around for paint spray.
  6. Important:  See below for paint characteristics of top base color.

  7. Spray top base color same as body color and then, spray clear coating.
  8. Dry the paint area using something like hand dryer.
  9. Install the removed parts following the Service Manual.
