Tools Required

J 42492-A (KM-421-A) Timing Belt Adjuster

Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in the Preface section.




1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the engine cover.
3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
4. Remove the right front wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
5. Remove the right front wheel well splash shield.
6. Remove the serpentine accessory drive belt. Refer to Power Steering Pump Belt Replacement .



7. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt.
8. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
9. Remove the right engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .



10. Remove the upper front timing belt cover bolts.
11. Remove the upper front timing belt cover.



12. Rotate the crankshaft at least one full turn clockwise using the crankshaft pulley bolt.
13. Align the mark on the crankshaft gear with the notch at the bottom of the rear timing belt cover.
14. Align the camshaft gear timing marks.



15. Loosen the automatic tensioner bolt. To relieve the belt tension, turn the hex-key tab counterclockwise.
16. Rotate the automatic tensioner hex-key tab clockwise until the adjust arm pointer of the timing belt automatic tensioner is aligned with the notch in the timing belt automatic tension bracket.



17. Tighten the automatic tensioner bolt
18. Rotate the crankshaft two full turns clockwise using the crankshaft gear bolt.
19. Check the automatic tensioner pointer.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.




20. When the adjust arm pointier of the timing belt automatic tensioner is aligned with the notch on the timing belt automatic tensioner bracket, the belt is tensioned correctly.

Tighten
Tighten the automatic tensioner bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb in).




21. Install the front timing belt cover.
22. Install the upper and lower front timing belt cover bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the front timing belt cover bolts to 6 N·m (53 lb in).

23. Install the right engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .



24. Install the crankshaft pulley.
25. Install the crankshaft pulley bolt.

Tighten
Tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft ) and retighten 30 degrees plus 15 degrees.

26. Install the serpentine accessory drive belt. Refer to Power Steering Pump Belt Replacement .
27. Install the right front wheel well splash shield.
28. Install the right front wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .



29. Install the air cleaner assembly.
30. Install the engine cover.

Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in the Preface section.

31. Connect the negative battery cable.
