Wheel Drive Shaft Inner Joint and Boot Replacement Diesel - Automatic and Manual

Tools Required

    • J 8059 Snap Ring Pliers
    • J 35566 Seal Clamp Pliers

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 1861746  Size: SH
  1. Remove the drive axle from the vehicle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement.
  2. Remove the large seal retaining clamp. Discard the clamp.
  3. Remove the small seal retaining clamp. Discard the clamp.

  4. Object Number: 1773895  Size: SH
  5. Pry the retaining ring from the joint housing.
  6. Remove the joint housing from the seal.

  7. Object Number: 1773897  Size: SH
  8. Degrease the joint assembly.
  9. Remove the shaft retaining ring using the J 8059  (1).

  10. Object Number: 1773899  Size: SH
  11. Remove the joint and the joint retaining ring from the axle shaft.
  12. Remove the seal from the axle shaft.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 1773899  Size: SH
  1. Install a new small seal retaining clamp onto the seal. Do not crimp the seal retaining clamp.
  2. Install the seal onto the axle shaft.
  3. Install the joint retaining ring and the joint onto the axle shaft.

  4. Object Number: 1773897  Size: SH
  5. Install the shaft retaining ring onto the axle shaft using the J 8059  (1).

  6. Object Number: 1773895  Size: SH
  7. Fill the joint housing with 140-160 g (5.0-5.6 ounces) of the recommended grease. Repack the tripot with 140-160 g (5.0-5.6 ounces) of the recommended grease.
  8. Install the retaining ring and the joint housing onto the joint assembly.

  9. Object Number: 1773893  Size: SH
  10. Install a new large seal retaining clamp. Crimp the large seal retaining clamp using the J 35566  (1).
  11. Crimp the new small seal retaining clamp using the seal clamp pliers J 35566  (1).
  12. Install the drive axle shaft to the vehicle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement.

    • J 35566 Seal Clamp Pliers
    • J 8059 Snap Ring Pliers

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 1242028  Size: SH
  1. Remove the drive axle from the vehicle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement.
  2. Remove the large seal retaining clamp. Discard the clamp.
  3. Remove the small seal retaining clamp. Discard the clamp.
  4. Separate the joint housing from the boot.

  5. Object Number: 1242029  Size: SH
  6. Degrease the tripot assembly.
  7. Remove the shaft retaining ring using the J 8059 .

  8. Object Number: 1242030  Size: SH
  9. Remove the tripot and the tripot joint retaining ring from the axle shaft.
  10. Remove the tripot joint seal from the axle shaft.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 1242030  Size: SH
  1. Install a new small seal retaining clamp onto the seal.
  2. Install the seal onto the axle shaft.

  3. Object Number: 1242029  Size: SH
  4. Install the shaft retaining ring onto the axle shaft using the J 8059  (1).

  5. Object Number: 1242028  Size: SH
  6. Fill the tripot housing with 195-215 g (6.9-7.6 oz) of the recommended grease. Repack the tripot with 195-215 g (6.9-7.6 oz) of the recommended grease.
  7. Install the boot to the joint housing.

  8. Object Number: 1242027  Size: SH
  9. Install a new large seal retaining clamp. Crimp the large seal retaining clamp using the J 35566 .
  10. Crimp the new small seal retaining clamp using the J 35566  (1).
  11. Install the drive axle shaft to the vehicle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement.

    • J 35566 Seal Clamp Pliers
    • J 8059 Snap Ring Pliers

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 1242033  Size: SH
  1. Remove the large seal retaining clamp. Discard the clamp.
  2. Remove the small seal retaining clamp. Discard the clamp.

  3. Object Number: 1242032  Size: SH
  4. Degrease the joint.
  5. Remove the shaft retaining ring using the J 8059  (1) .

  6. Object Number: 1242031  Size: SH
  7. Remove the axle shaft from the joint assembly.
  8. Caution: The ball retainer is stacked in position and is not servicable. Attempting to service the ball retainer could result in reduced vehicle performance and possible personal injury.

  9. Remove the seal from the joint assembly.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 1242031  Size: SH
  1. Install a new small seal retaining clamp onto the seal. Do not crimp.
  2. Install the seal onto the axle shaft.
  3. Install the joint assembly onto the axle shaft.

  4. Object Number: 1242032  Size: SH
  5. Install the shaft retaining ring using the J 8059  (1).

  6. Object Number: 1242038  Size: SH
  7. Fill the joint assembly with 120-140 g (4.2-4.9 oz) of the recommended grease. Repack the tripot with 120-140 g (4.2-4.9 oz) of the recommended grease.
  8. Install the a new large seal retaining clamp.
  9. Crimp the new large seal retaining clamp using the J 35566 .
  10. Crimp the new small retaining clamp using the J 35566  (1).
