Parking Brake Adjustment Disc Brakes

Adjustment Procedure

  1. Release the park brake.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  3. Turn the rear wheel by hand in order to test the amount of drag in the park brake.
  4. Apply the park brake.
  5. Test the amount of drag in the park brake. If the park brake does NOT apply and release properly, continue with this procedure.
  6. Release the park brake.
  7. Remove the rear wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  8. Remove the rear brake calipers. Refer to Rear Brake Caliper Replacement .
  9. Remove the rear brake rotors. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement .

  11. Disconnect the park brake cable from the park brake lever on each side of the vehicle.
  12. Inspect and replace any parts of doubtful strength or quality. This can be shown by discoloration from heat or stress.

  13. Object Number: 1307959  Size: SH
  14. Using a vernier caliper, measure the shoe assembly diameter as closely as possible to the center of the lining material.
  15. Adjust the shoe assembly to 167.6-167.8 mm (6.60-6.61 in). Turn the adjuster nut clockwise to increase the diameter.
  16. Inspect and install the rear brake rotors. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement .

  17. Object Number: 1290294  Size: SH
  18. Install the park brake cable to the park brake lever on each side of the vehicle.
  19. Apply the park brake. Stop after hearing 2 clicks.
  20. Turn the rear rotor by hand until the wheel begins to drag.
  21. Release the park brake.
  22. Turn the rear rotor by hand to inspect the drag. Adjust the cable if necessary.
  23. Repeat the process for the other rear wheel. Adjust the cable if necessary.
  24. Install the rear brake calipers. Refer to Rear Brake Caliper Replacement .
  25. Install the rear wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  26. Lower the vehicle.

Parking Brake Adjustment Drum Brakes

Adjustment Procedure

  1. Adjust the rear brakes. Refer to Drum Brake Adjustment .
  2. Release the parking brake.
  3. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  4. Inspect the parking brake cables for free movement.

  5. Object Number: 1290293  Size: SH
  6. Lower the vehicle
  7. Remove the parking brake/gearshift console hood. Refer to Front Floor Console Replacement .
  8. Partially raise the vehicle.
  9. Turn the self-locking nut on the parking brake lever assembly until the wheels are difficult to turn.
  10. Back off the nut until the rear wheels are just free to turn.
  11. Lower the vehicle
  12. Install the parking brake/gearshift console hood. Refer to Front Floor Console Replacement .
