Steering Wheel Replacement Without SIR

Tools Required

    • J 1859-A Steering Wheel Puller
    • J 36541-A Puller Legs
    •  KM-210-A Steering Wheel Puller

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 1308134  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Rotate the steering wheel to allow access to the steering wheel horn cap screw. Remove the horn cap screw.
  3. Rotate the steering wheel to allow access to the other steering wheel horn cap screw. Remove the horn cap screw.

  5. Remove the steering wheel horn cap and disconnect the horn leads.

  6. Object Number: 1308166  Size: SH
  7. Remove the steering wheel nut and the retaining clip.

  8. Object Number: 1308216  Size: SH

    Important: In order to install the steering wheel correctly, match-mark the steering column shaft to the steering wheel.

  9. Remove the steering wheel using the KM-210-A or the J 1859-A and the J 36541-A  (1) .
  10. Unclip the contact ring from the steering wheel, if necessary.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 1308166  Size: SH
  1. Clip the contact ring on the steering wheel, if necessary.
  2. Align the match-marks on the steering wheel and the steering column shaft.
  3. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  4. Install the retaining clip and new steering wheel nut.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the steering wheel nut to 38 N·m (28 lb ft).

  6. Bend the tabs to secure the retaining clip.
  7. Connect the horn leads and install the steering wheel horn cap.

  8. Object Number: 1308134  Size: SH
  9. Rotate the steering wheel to allow access to the steering wheel horn cap screw. Install the horn cap screw.
  10. Rotate the steering wheel to allow access to the other steering wheel horn cap screw. Install the horn cap screw.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten both steering wheel horn cap screws to 4.5 N·m (40 lb in).

  12. Connect the negative battery cable.

Steering Wheel Replacement With SIR

    • KM-210-A Steering Wheel Puller

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 1308218  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the SIR module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement .
  3. Remove the steering wheel nut and the retaining clip.
  4. Use paint in order to place match marks on the steering wheel and on the steering shaft.

  5. Object Number: 1308216  Size: SH
  6. Remove the steering wheel using the KM-210-A or the J 1859-A and the J 36541-A  (1) .
  7. Unclip the contact ring from the steering wheel, if necessary.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 1308220  Size: SH
  1. Clip the contact ring on the steering wheel, if necessary.
  2. Align the match-marks on the steering wheel and the steering column shaft. Turn the signal cancelling cam on the wheel to the left.
  3. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  4. Install the retaining clip and the steering wheel nut.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the steering wheel nut to 38 N·m (28 lb ft).

  6. Bend the tabs to secure the retaining clip.
  7. Install the SIR module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement .
  8. Connect the negative battery cable.
