Removal Procedure

    Warning: Refer to Sensing and Diagnostic Module Voltage after Ignition is Turned Off Warning in the Preface section.

    Warning: Refer to Battery Disconnect Warning in the Preface section.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the steering wheel module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement.
  3. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement.
  4. Remove the screws from the upper and lower steering column covers, and remove the covers.
  5. Remove the driver side knee bolster or instrument panel lower cover.
  6. Disconnect the driver air bag, horn, and connectors from the lower steering column.
  7. Remove the screws and discard them.
  8. Remove the steering wheel module coil from the steering shaft.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 1308841 Size: SH

    Warning: When servicing the steering column, the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System clock spring must be centered for proper steering wheel operation. Failure to properly center the SIR clock spring may result in reduced turnability of the steering wheel causing the vehicle to improperly maneuver and may cause the SIR system to be inoperative.

  1. Install the steering wheel module coil to the steering shaft.

    2. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

  2. Install new mounting screws and tighten to 3 N·m (27 lb in).
  3. Connect the driver air bag, horn, and connectors to the lower steering column.
  4. Install the driver side knee bolster or instrument panel lower cover.
  5. Install the upper and lower steering column covers and screws.
  6. Install the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement.
  7. Install the driver air bag. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement.
  8. Inspect the alignment of the steering wheel module coil. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Centering.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
