Did you perform the Starting System Check?

  1. Test for battery voltage at the starter solenoid terminal S.
  2. Engage the parking brake and place the gear shift lever in N or the manual selector lever in P or N.
  3. Depress the clutch pedal fully (manual transaxle).
  4. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.

Is battery voltage present?

Go to Step 3

Test for an open in the BLK/RED wire between the battery and the starter solenoid.

Is an open present?

Go to Step 21

Replace the starter solenoid. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement and Starter Motor Overhaul .

Test for voltage at the starter relay terminal 1.

Test for an open between the starter relay terminal 1 and the MAIN fuse in fuse and relay block  1.

Is an open present?

Repair the open between the battery positive terminal and the MAIN fuse in fuse and relay block  1. Replace fuse and relay block  1 if necessary. Refer to Underhood Fuse Block Replacement .

Is the repair complete?

Go to the Starting System Check

Test for an open in the WHT/BLK wire between the starter relay terminal 4 and G103.

Is an open present?

Go to Step 21

Test for battery voltage at the starter relay terminal 3 with the ignition switch in the START position.

Is battery voltage present?

  1. Inspect that the AM2 fuse is not open.
  2. Test for battery voltage at the ST fuse in junction block 2 with the ignition switch in the START position.

Is battery voltage present?

Go to Step  15

  1. Test for an open between the AM2 fuse and connector 3 terminal 8 in fuse and relay block 1.
  2. Test for an open between the ST relay terminal 3 and connector 8 terminal 3 in fuse and relay block 1. Refer to

Test for an open in the RED wire between the ST fuse in junction block 2 and the ignition switch.

    • Test for an open in the BLK /WHT wire between the PNP switch (automatic transaxle) and the ST fuse.
    • Test for an open in the BLK /WHT wire between the CPP switch (manual transaxle) and the ST fuse.

Is an open present?

    • Test the PNP switch for continuity in the park and neutral positions (automatic transaxle).
    • Test the CPP switch for continuity with the clutch pedal depressed (manual transaxle).

Did the switch test OK?

Go to Step  17

  1. Test for an open in the BLK wire between the PNP switch (automatic transaxle) and connector 8 terminal 3 of fuse and relay block 1.
  2. Test for an open in the BLK wire between the CPP switch (manual transaxle) and connector 8 terminal 3 of fuse and relay block 1.

Is an open present?

Go to Step 21

Replace fuse and relay block 1. Refer to Underhood Fuse Block Replacement .

  1. Replace the PNP switch (automatic transaxle). Refer to Park/Neutral Position Switch in Automatic Transmission-4 Speed-MS7.
  2. Replace the CPP switch (manual transaxle). Refer to Clutch Pedal Position Switch Replacement in Clutch.
