  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in General Information.
  2. Place a jack stand under the suspension crossmember.
  3. Lower the vehicle slightly so the weight of vehicle rests on the suspension crossmember and not the control arms.
  4. Remove the steering knuckle with the axle hub. Refer to Steering Knuckle Replacement .
  5. Clamp the steering knuckle with the axle hub in a soft-jawed vise.

  6. Object Number: 238010  Size: SH
  7. Inspect the movement of the ball stud by moving the ball stud back and forth five times.
  8. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  9. Use a torque wrench in order to turn the nut continuously for one turn every 2-4 seconds.
  10. Take the torque reading on the fifth turn.
  11. Reading
    The reading should be 1.0-2.9 N·m (9-26 lb in).

  12. If the movement of the ball stud is not within the specification, replace the ball stud. Refer to Lower Control Arm Ball Joint Replacement .
