Test the brakes on a roadway with the following characteristics:

    • Dry
    • Clean
    • Reasonably smooth
    • Level

Do not test the brakes on a roadway with the following characteristics that will cause the tires to grip the road unequally:

    • Wet
    • Greasy
    • Covered with loose dirt

Do not test the brakes on a crowned roadway. A crowned roadway will throw the weight of the vehicle toward the wheels on the lower side of the road.

Do not test the brakes on a rough roadway. A rough roadway will cause the wheels to bounce.

Test the brakes at different vehicle speeds, using both light and heavy pedal pressure. Locked brakes and sliding tires do not indicate brake efficiency. Heavily braked but turning wheels will stop a vehicle in less distance.

If the vehicle is equipped with Anti-lock Brakes (ABS), apply heavy pedal pressure to activate the ABS. Do not decrease the pedal pressure until the vehicle is completely stopped. Decreasing pedal pressure after the ABS is activated will deactivate the ABS and lengthen the stopping distance.

Due to a higher deceleration capability, you may feel a firmer pedal at higher deceleration rates.
