Brake Pedal Height


    Object Number: 327427  Size: SH
  1. Measure the brake pedal height from the floor to the center of the brake pedal. Ensure that the brake pedal height is within 148.6-158.6 mm (5.85-6.244 in). If the brake pedal height is not within the specifications, adjust brake pedal height using the following procedure:
  2. Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4. Remove the knee bolster. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.
  5. Remove the left side ventilation duct.
  6. Remove the return spring for the brake pedal.
  7. Loosen the locknut for the stoplamp switch (2).
  8. Loosen the pushrod locknut (1).
  9. Adjust the brake pedal travel by turning the pushrod until the brake pedal travel is within specifications.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the pushrod locknut (1) to 26 N·m (19 lb ft).

  11. Adjust the stoplamp switch (2) clearance. Refer to Stop Lamp Switch Adjustment .

  13. Install the return spring for the brake pedal.
  14. Install the left side ventilation duct.
  15. Install the knee bolster. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement .
  16. Connect the negative battery cable.

Brake Pedal Free Play


    Object Number: 327431  Size: SH
  1. Depress the brake pedal several times until there is no more vacuum left in the booster.
  2. Push in the pedal by hand to the beginning of the resistance.
  3. Measure the distance the pedal moves to the beginning of the resistance. If the brake pedal free play is 1-6 mm (0.04-0.24 in), then the operation is normal. If the brake pedal free play does not meet the specification, then check the stoplamp switch clearance. Refer to Stop Lamp Switch Adjustment .

Brake Pedal Reserve Distance

J 28662 Brake Pedal Effort Gauge

  1. Ensure the parking brake is released.
  2. Start the engine.
  3. Using the J 28662 , depress the brake pedal with 490 N (110 lb) of force.
  4. Measure the distance between the surface of the brake pedal and the asphalt sheet. If the brake pedal reserve distance is more than 85 mm (3.35 in), the operation is normal. If the brake pedal reserve distance does not meet the specification, troubleshoot the brake system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake Diagnostic System Check .
