Removal Procedure
Caution: When you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the
SIR wiring, you must disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System.
Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause air bag deployment,
personal injury, or unnecessary SIR system repairs.
- Disable the SIR system. Refer to
Disabling the SIR System
.
Important: In the event deployment has occurred, inspect the inflatable restraint
module coil wire for any sign of scorching, melting, or other damage due to
excessive heat. If the coil is damaged replace it.
- Place the front wheels in the straight ahead position.
- Remove the steering wheel
from the steering column. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement
in Steering Wheel and Column - Standard,
or Steering Wheel and Column - Tilt.
- Remove the three screws and the steering column lower trim cover
(6) from the steering column.
- Remove the one screw and the steering column upper trim cover
(7) from the steering column.
- Remove the wire tie from
the inflatable restraint module coil wire (3).
- Disconnect the inflatable restraint module coil electrical connector.
- Remove the screws and the inflatable restraint module coil (2)
from the turn signal base (4).
- Inspect the turn signal switch base (4) for physical damage. If
physical damage is evident, replace the turn signal, headlamp,
and windshield washer switch with levers and the inflatable restraint module
coil as an assembly.
Installation Procedure
- Ensure the front wheels are in the straight ahead position.
- Install the inflatable
restraint module coil (2) to the turn signal base (4). Secure with four screws.
- Center the inflatable restraint module coil, if necessary. Refer
to Inflatable Restraint Coil Centering - Off Vehicle
in Steering Wheel and
Column -- Standard or Steering Wheel and Column -- Tilt.
- Connect the inflatable restraint module coil electrical connector.
- Install the wire tie to the inflatable restraint module coil wire
(3).
- Install the steering column
upper trim cover (7). Secure with one screw.
- Install the steering column lower trim cover (6). Secure with
three screws.
- Install the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement
in Steering Wheel and Column - Standard,
or Steering Wheel and Column - Tilt.
- Enable the SIR system. Refer to
Enabling the SIR System
