  1. Remove the rear brake inspection hole plug.
  2. Visually inspect the brake shoe lining thickness.

    3. Brake Shoe Lining Thickness Specification
    The brake shoe lining thickness is 1-4 mm (0.039-0.157 in).

  3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  4. Remove the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement .

  5. Visually inspect the brake shoes for the following conditions:
    6. • Cracks
    • Chipping
    • Glazing
    • Uneven wear
    • The lining material is less than 1 mm (0.039 in)
  6. If any of these conditions exist, replace the brake shoes. Always replace the brake shoes in axle sets. Inspect all of the components of the rear brakes for cause and further problems. Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement .
