Removal Procedure

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
  2. Remove the upper mounting bolt (1).
  3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  4. Remove the 6 bolts and the right side splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.
  5. Remove the starter motor electrical connector.
  6. Remove the retaining nut (3) and the positive (+) battery cable from the starter solenoid.
  7. Remove the lower mounting bolt (2) and the starter motor from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the starter motor to the vehicle.
  2. Install the lower mounting bolt finger tight (2).
  3. Lower the vehicle. Do not remove from hoist.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the upper mounting bolt (1).
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the upper mounting bolt to 37 N·m (27 lb ft).

  7. Raise the vehicle.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the lower mounting bolt to 37 N·m (27 lb ft).

  9. Install the starter motor electrical connector.
  10. Install the positive battery cable and the retaining nut (3) to the starter solenoid.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the retaining nut to 8.8 N·m (78 lb in).

  12. Install the right side splash shield. Secure with the 6 bolts. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14. Connect the negative (-) battery cable.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the negative battery cable to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).
