Did you review the Instrument Panel, Gages and Console Description and Operation and perform the necessary inspections?

Verify that the speedometer and the odometer inaccurate.

Does the system operate normally?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

Go to Step 3

Using a scan tool, test for a DTC P0500.

Does the scan tool register a DTC P0500?

Go to one of the following procedures:

    •  DTC P0500 in Manual Transmission - MB4 and MB5
    •  DTC P0500 in Automatic Transmission - 4 Speed MS7

Does the speedometer register any change in position?

Go to Step 5

  1. Raise the drive wheels.
  2. Support the lower control arms so that the drive axles are in a horizontal (straight) position.
  3. Start and idle the engine.
  4. Accelerate the car so the speedometer reads around 32 km/h (20 mph).
  5. Measure the frequency of the output of the VSS cavity 3.

Is the measured frequency within the specified range?

Go to Step 6

Test the WHT/BLU wire between the VSS connector cavity 3 and the instrument cluster assembly connector C2 cavity 10 for an open.

Is an open condition present?

Go to Step 9

  1. Turn the vehicle OFF.
  2. Replace the VSS. Refer to one of the following procedures:
  3. •  Vehicle Speed Sensor Replacement in Manual Transmission - MB4 and MB5
    •  Vehicle Speed Sensor Replacement in Automatic Transmission - 3 Speed - MB3

Did you complete the repair?

Go to Step 23

Inspect the instrument cluster assembly printed circuit for damage.

Is the printed circuit damaged?

Go to Step 11

Repair the open in the VSS signal input circuit between the VSS connector cavity 3 and the instrument cluster assembly connector C2 cavity 10. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you complete the repair?

Go to Step 23

Replace the speedometer/odometer. Refer to Speedometer Replacement .

Replace the instrument cluster printed circuit. Refer to Printed Instrument Cluster Circuit Replacement .

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
  2. Using a test lamp, check the VSS cavity 1 to ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 13

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  2. Disconnect the VSS connector.
  3. Test for continuity between the VSS connector cavity 2 to ground.

Is continuity present?

Go to Step 21

Repair the open in the ignition voltage circuit between the VSS cavity 1 and the SP258 C2. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Is the repair complete?

Go to Step 23

Replace the VSS. Refer to one of the following procedures:

    •  Vehicle Speed Sensor Replacement in Manual Transmission - MB4 and MB5
    •  Vehicle Speed Sensor Replacement in Automatic Transmission - 3 Speed - MB3

Are any other gauges inaccurate?

Go to Step 18

Test the RED/WHT wire between the VSS cavity 2 and the instrument cluster assembly connector C2 cavity 4 for an open.

Is a short condition present?

Go to Step 20

Test the BRN wire between the instrument cluster assembly connector C3 cavity 15 and ground for a short.

Is a short condition present?

Go to Step 19

Repair the short in the BRN wire between the instrument cluster assembly connector C3 cavity 15 and ground. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Go to Step 23

Repair the open in the RED/WHT wire between the VSS cavity 2 and the instrument cluster assembly connector C2 cavity 4. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the VSS signal input circuit between the VSS and the instrument cluster for an open.

Is an open condition present?

Go to Step 22

Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
