Removal Procedure

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Remove the positive and the negative battery cable.
  2. Install the engine support fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture in Engine Mechanical - 1.8L.
  3. Remove the right hand and left hand splash shields.
  4. Remove the front tire and wheel assemblies.
  5. Remove the ball joint to control arm nuts and bolts and separate from the control arm.
  6. Remove the 2 bolts from the front transaxle mount.
  7. Remove the 14 front suspension crossmember and center crossmember bolts.
  8. Remove the rear transaxle mount through bolt and the mount from the transaxle.

Installation Procedure

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. Install the rear transaxle mount and through bolt.
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the rear transaxle mount bolt to 60 N·m (44 lb ft).

  3. Install the front suspension and crossmember and center crossmember and the 14 bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 60 N·m (44 lb ft).

  5. Install the transaxle mount through bolt.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the transaxle mount through bolt to 60 N·m (44 lb ft).

  7. Remove the engine support fixture.
  8. Install the air cleaner box.
  9. Install the air cleaner box bolts. Refer to Air Cleaner Element Replacement in Engine Controls - 1.8L.
  10. Install the air filter.
  11. Install the air cleaner hose and cap assembly.
  12. Connect the IAT connector.
  13. Install the battery tray and battery. Refer to Battery Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  14. Install the hold down bracket.
  15. Install the hold down bracket bolt and nut.
  16. Tighten
    Tighten the hold down bracket bolt and nut to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  17. Install the positive and negative battery cables.
