Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. If the vehicle is equipped with an Antilock Brake System (ABS), remove the one bolt for the ABS wheel speed sensor and the sensor from the steering knuckle. Position the sensor to the side.
  4. Remove the front brake hose bolt and the hose from the strut. Position the hose and the bolt to the side.
  5. Remove the front brake caliper bracket. Refer to Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement in Disc Brakes.
  6. Remove the front brake rotor. Refer to Brake Rotor Replacement in Disc Brakes.
  7. Remove the steering knuckle from the vehicle. Refer to Steering Knuckle Replacement . It is not necessary to remove the front ball joint from the steering knuckle in order to remove the wheel hub, bearing, or seal.

  8. Object Number: 242153  Size: SH
  9. Clamp the steering knuckle in a soft jawed vise.
  10. Remove the inner seal shield from the steering knuckle.

  11. Object Number: 242149  Size: SH
  12. Remove the inner oil seal from the steering knuckle using the J 26941 and the J 23907 .
  13. Remove the front wheel bearing retainer from the steering knuckle using snap ring pliers.
  14. Remove the 3 brake shield bolts from the steering knuckle using a TORX ® wrench (T30).
  15. Remove the hub and the brake shield from the steering knuckle using the J 25287 and the J 35378 .
  16. Remove the outer seal from the steering knuckle using the J 26941 and the J 23907 .
  17. Remove the front wheel bearing outside inner race from the steering knuckle using the J 22912-B and a press.
  18. Remove the front wheel bearing from the steering knuckle using the following:
  19. • J 8092
    • J 21784
    • The inside inner race
    • A receiver cup

Installation Procedure

    Important: Keep the balls inside the bearing.

  1. Remove the new bearing inner races (inner and outer) from a new bearing.
  2. Press the new bearing into the steering knuckle using the following tools:
  3. • J 37777
    • J 8092
  4. Install the new bearing inner races (inside and outside) to the bearing using the following tools:
  5. • J 35399
    • J 8092
    • A press
  6. Insert the side lip of the new outer seal into the J 35737-1 .
  7. Drive the outer seal into the steering knuckle.

  8. Apply GCLB grease (GM P/N 1051344 or equivalent) to the outer seal lip.
  9. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  10. Install the brake shield to the steering knuckle. Secure the brake shield with the three bolts using a TORX ® wrench (T30).
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 8.3 N·m (74 lb ft).

  12. Place the hub on a press with the wheel stud side down.
  13. Place the steering knuckle on the hub.
  14. Important: Use care in order to not damage the bearing while installing the hub.

  15. Press the hub into the steering knuckle using the following tools:
  16. • J 35399
    • J 8092
    • A press
  17. Install the front wheel bearing retainer to the steering knuckle using snap ring pliers.
  18. Install the inner seal to the steering knuckle using the J 35737-2 .
  19. Apply GCLB grease (GM P/N 1051344 or equivalent) to the inner seal lip.
  20. Important: If the vehicle is equipped with ABS, align the holes for the ABS speed sensor in the inner shield and the steering knuckle.

  21. Install the inner seal shield to the steering knuckle.

  22. Object Number: 242096  Size: SH
  23. If installing the wheel hub, bearing, and seal to a new steering knuckle, install the ball stud. Refer to Steering Knuckle Replacement .
  24. If installing the wheel hub, bearing, and seal to the steering knuckle with the ball stud attached, remove the steering knuckle from the vise.
  25. Install the steering knuckle with the ball stud to the vehicle. Refer to Steering Knuckle Replacement .
  26. Install the brake rotor to the vehicle. Refer to Brake Rotor Replacement in Disc Brakes.
  27. Install the brake caliper bracket to the vehicle. Refer to Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement in Disc Brakes.
  28. Install the following components to the strut:
  29. • The front brake hose
    • The one bolt

    Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 29 N·m (22 lb ft).

  30. Install the ABS wheel speed sensor to the knuckle. Secure with one bolt.
  31. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  32. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  33. Lower the vehicle.
  34. Inspect the front wheel alignment. Refer to Wheel Alignment Measurement in Wheel Alignment.
