J 36850 Transmission Assembly Lubricant

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the 6 bolts and the left splash shield from the vehicle.
  3. Place a drain pan or suitable container under the differential drain plug.
  4. Remove the differential filler plug from the differential cover at the rear of the transaxle.
  5. Remove the differential drain plug from the transaxle case under the differential cover and drain the transaxle fluid from the differential.
  6. Remove the left front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  7. Remove the left front drive axle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement in Wheel Drive Shafts.
  8. Remove the following from the transaxle:
  9. • The 2 bolts and the left drive axle stone shield
    • The 2 bolts and the governor cover retainer
    • The governor cover and the O-ring
    • The 1 thrust washer, the governor assembly, the 1 plate washer and the governor body adapter
  10. Inspect the governor for driven gear excessive wear or damage. Replace as necessary.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the governor body adapter, the 1 plate washer, the governor assembly and the 1 thrust washer into the transaxle.
  2. Apply the J 36850 to the governor cover O-ring.
  3. Install the governor cover O-ring and the governor cover into the transaxle.
  4. Install the governor cover retainer to the transaxle.
  5. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Install the 2 retainer bolts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the retainer bolts to 13 N·m (115 lb in).

  8. Install the left drive axle stone shield and the 2 bolts to the transaxle.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 5 N·m (44 lb in).

  10. Install the left drive axle. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  11. Install the left front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement in Wheel Drive Shafts.
  12. Install the differential drain plug into the transaxle.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the differential drain plug to 39 N·m (29 lb ft).

  14. Refill the transaxle, as necessary. Refer to Automatic Transmission Fluid and Filter Replacement .
  15. Lower the vehicle.
