Removal Procedure

Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
  2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Remove the transaxle drain plug after the transaxle has cooled and drain the fluid into the drain pan or suitable container.
  4. Remove the following components from the transaxle:
  5. • The 18 bolts
    • The fluid pan
    • The fluid pan gasket
  6. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the shift solenoid NO. 1 and 2 and the torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid.
  7. Remove the following components from the valve body:
  8. • The bolts
    • The shift solenoid NO. 1
    • The shift solenoid NO. 2
    • The Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) solenoid
  9. Remove the solenoid wiring harness retaining nut and the plate.
  10. Remove the solenoid wiring harness retaining bracket from the outer side of the transaxle case.
  11. Remove the solenoid wiring harness from the transaxle.
  12. Inspect the wiring harness grommet and the O-ring for cuts or other damage. Replace the components if necessary.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the solenoid wiring harness into the transaxle case.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the solenoid wiring harness retaining plate and nut.
  4. Tighten
Tighten the solenoid wiring harness retaining nut to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  5. Install the solenoid wiring harness retaining bracket to the transaxle case.
  6. Tighten
Tighten the solenoid wiring harness retaining bracket bolt to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  7. Install the shift solenoid NO. 1 and NO.2 and the TCC solenoid to the valve body. Secure the items with retaining bolts.
  8. Tighten
Tighten the retaining bolts to 4 N·m (35 lb in).

  9. Connect the electrical connectors to the shift solenoid NO.1 and NO. 2 and the TCC solenoid.
  10. Install the new fluid pan gasket, the fluid pan and to the transaxle. Secure the items with 18 bolts.
  11. Tighten
Tighten the transaxle fluid pan bolts to 6 N·m (53 lb in).

  12. Install the transaxle drain plug.
  13. Tighten
Tighten the drain plug to 23 N·m (17 lb ft).

  14. Lower the vehicle.
  15. Connect the negative (-) battery cable.
  16. Refill the transaxle, as necessary. Refer to Automatic Transmission Fluid and Filter Replacement .
