Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface.
Inspect the power steering fluid level in the reservoir (4).

Notice: When adding fluid or making a complete fluid change, always use the proper power steering fluid. Failure to use the proper fluid will cause hose and seal damage and fluid leaks.

If the fluid level is below the COLD MIN mark (2), add DEXRON®-III Automatic Transmission fluid, GM P/N 12346143, or equivalent, to the reservoir.

Notice: Do not hold the steering wheel in the full turn position longer than 5 seconds, as damage to the steering pump may result.

With the engine idling at 1,000 RPM or less, turn the steering wheel from stop to stop several times in order to boost fluid temperature to 80°C (176°F).
Inspect the fluid level in the reservoir.
If the fluid level is below the MIN HOT mark (1), add DEXRON®-III Automatic Transmission fluid, GM P/N 12346143, or equivalent, to the reservoir.
If the fluid level is above the MAX HOT mark (1), use a siphon in order to remove fluid from the reservoir.
Inspect the power steering fluid for foaming or a milky appearance. Foaming and a milky appearance indicate either the existence of air in the system or the fluid level is too low. If foaming or a milky appearance exists, bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
