Removal Procedure

    Object Number: 244070 Size: SH

Notice: The steering column must be in the LOCK position before disconnecting the following components:

       • The steering column
       • The steering shaft coupling
       • The intermediate shaft
       • The lower steering shaft
After disconnecting these components, do not move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow these procedures may cause improper alignment of some components during installation and result in possible damage to the SIR coil.

  1. Place a match mark (3) on the steering shaft coupling and on the steering gear pinion shaft.
  2. Remove the upper bolt (1) from the coupling.
  3. Remove the lower bolt (2) from the coupling.

  4. Object Number: 363408 Size: SH
  5. Move the coupling (4) onto the column shaft in order to separate the column shaft from the gear pinion shaft.
  6. Remove the coupling from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. If you are installing a new steering shaft coupling, copy the match mark from the old coupling to the new coupling.

  2. Object Number: 363408 Size: SH
  3. Move the coupling (4) onto the steering column shaft.

  4. Object Number: 244070 Size: SH
  5. Align the match marks (3) and move the coupling onto the steering gear pinion shaft.
  6. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  7. Install the upper bolt (1) and the lower bolt (2) to the coupling.
  8. Tighten
Tighten the 2 bolts to 35 N·m (26 lb ft).
