J 24319-B Universal Steering Linkage Puller

Removal Procedure

    Important: The weight of the vehicle must not be on the tires or on the lower control arms.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Use a jack stand in order to support the suspension crossmember.
  3. Remove the steering knuckle with the axle hub. Refer to Steering Knuckle Replacement .
  4. Clamp the steering knuckle with the axle hub in a soft-jawed vise.

  6. Remove the cotter pin (5) and the nut (4).
  7. Remove the ball joint (3) from the steering knuckle (2) using the J 24319-B .

Installation Procedure

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

    Important: Do not loosen the castle nut in order to insert the cotter pin.

  1. Install the ball joint (3) to the steering knuckle (2). Secure the ball joint to the knuckle with the nut (4).
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 124 N·m (91 lb ft). Tighten the nut up to 1/6 additional turn in order to align the cotter pin slot with the ball stud hole.

  3. Install the cotter pin (5). Bend the cotter pin ends in order to retain the nut.
  4. Install the steering knuckle with the axle hub. Refer to Steering Knuckle Replacement .
  5. Remove the jack stand.
  6. Lower the vehicle from the frame contact hoist.
  7. Raise the vehicle on an alignment rack. Measure the wheel alignment. Adjust as necessary. Refer to Wheel Alignment Measurement in Wheel Alignment.
  8. Lower the vehicle.
