Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the rear tire and wheel assembly from the vehicle. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.

  3. Object Number: 239089  Size: SH
  4. Remove the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement in Drum Brakes.

  5. Object Number: 603602  Size: SH
  6. If the vehicle has ABS, remove the bolt (2) and the wheel speed sensor (1) from the knuckle. Position the wheel speed sensor to the side.
  7. Remove the 4 axle hub and rear suspension knuckle mounting bolts.
  8. Remove the axle hub from the vehicle.
  9. Remove the O-ring from the backing plate.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 431707  Size: SH
  1. Coat the new O-ring with GCLB grease, GM P/N 1051344, or equivalent.
  2. Install a new O-ring seal to the backing plate.
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the axle hub into position. Secure the hub with the 4 bolts.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 80 N·m (59 lb ft).

  6. If the vehicle has ABS, install the wheel speed sensor (1). Secure the wheel speed sensor to the knuckle with the bolt (2).
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 7.8 N·m (69 lb in).

  8. Install the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement in Drum Brakes.
  9. Install the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  10. Lower the vehicle.
