Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  2. Drain the engine coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  3. Remove the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  4. Remove the A/C condenser, if equipped. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement in HVAC Systems with A/C - Manual.
  5. Remove the cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Replacement .
  6. Remove the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .
  7. Remove the valve lifters. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement .
  8. Rotate the crankshaft until the number 1 piston is at top dead center (TDC) on the compression stroke.
  9. Remove the oil pump drive. Refer to Oil Pump Drive Replacement .

  11. Remove the camshaft position sensor. Refer to Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement in Engine Controls.

  12. Object Number: 1152  Size: SH
  13. Remove the camshaft bolt.
  14. Remove the camshaft sprocket and the camshaft timing chain. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement .

  15. Object Number: 4321  Size: SH
  16. Remove the camshaft thrust plate bolts.
  17. Important: When removing the camshaft, do not damage the camshaft bearings.

    For the camshaft bearing removal procedure, refer to Camshaft Removal .

  18. Remove the camshaft.
  19. Important: If a new camshaft is being installed, change the engine oil and the oil filter.

  20. Inspect the camshaft for wear or damage.
  21. Refer to Camshaft and Bearings Cleaning and Inspection .

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the camshaft.
  2. Refer to Camshaft Installation .

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the camshaft thrust plate bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the camshaft thrust plate bolts to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  5. Install the camshaft position sensor. Refer to Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement in Engine Controls.
  6. Install the crankshaft sprocket and camshaft timing chain. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement .
  7. Install the oil pump drive. Refer to Oil Pump Drive Replacement .
  8. Install the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .
  9. Install the valve lifters. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement .
  10. Install the cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Replacement .
  11. Install the air conditioning condenser, if equipped. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement in HVAC Systems with A/C - Manual.
  12. Install the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  13. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Replacement in Engine Electrical.
