Installation Procedure

Tools Required

J 5590 Crankshaft Gear Installer.

    Object Number: 4897 Size: SH

Important: If any of the camshaft drive components are being replaced to correct a noise condition, replace all of the components in the camshaft drive system.

  1. Install the crankshaft sprocket key, if removed.
  2. Install the crankshaft sprocket with the timing mark facing away from the engine, using J 5590 and a hammer.
  3. Make sure that the crankshaft sprocket is seated against the crankshaft.

    Object Number: 30191 Size: SH
  4. Compress the timing chain tensioner spring.
  5. Insert a cotter pin or a nail into the hole in the tensioner in order to retain the timing chain tensioner shoe.

  6. Object Number: 4900 Size: SH

Important: Do not tighten the timing chain tensioner bolts.

  7. Install the timing chain tensioner.

  8. Object Number: 4899 Size: SH
  9. Align the crankshaft sprocket timing mark, the stamped circle, with the tab on the timing chain tensioner.
  10. Align the camshaft sprocket timing mark, the 8 mm hole, with the tab on the timing chain tensioner.
  11. Install the camshaft sprocket and the timing chain.
  12. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  13. Install the camshaft sprocket bolt.
  14. Tighten

    1. Tighten the timing chain tensioner bolts to 24 N·m (17 lb ft).
    2. Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt to 130 N·m (96 lb ft).

    Object Number: 30191 Size: SH
  15. Remove the cotter pin or nail from the hole in the timing chain tensioner.
  16. Install the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .
