DEFINITION: The roughness or vibration occurs while driving the vehicle at various speeds.

The propeller shaft is bent or dented.

Replace the propeller shaft. Refer to the appropriate procedure:

Undercoating is on the propeller shaft.

Clean the propeller shaft.

The tires are unbalanced at 48-80 km/h (30-50 mph).

Balance or replace the tires.

Refer to Tire and Wheel Balancing in Vibration Diagnosis.

The universal joints are tight.

On snap ring retainer U-joints, tap the yokes with a hammer in order to free up the U-joints. If you are unable to free up the U-joints, or if the joint feels rough, replace the joint. Refer to the appropriate procedure:

The universal joints are worn.

Replace the worn universal joints. Refer to the appropriate procedure:

The companion flange is bent or has excessive runout.

Refer to Propeller Shaft Runout Specifications in Vibration Diagnosis and Correction.

Burrs or gouges are on the companion flange.

    • Inspect the snap ring locating surfaces on the flange yoke.
    • Deburr or replace the companion flange.

The propeller shaft, parking brake drum, or the companion flange is unbalanced.

    • Check for a missing balance weight on all three components.
    • Rotate the propeller shaft in the companion flange 180 degrees.

The rear joint angle is incorrect, usually as a result of the angle being too large.

    • Inspect and correct the trim height at curb weight.
    • Inspect and correct the joint angle. Refer to Vibration Diagnosis in General Information.

The slip spline exhibits excessive looseness.

Replace the necessary parts.

The yokes or flanges are distorted or damaged.

Install new yokes or flanges. Refer to Double Cardan Universal Joints Replacement .

The yokes are out of phase on two-piece propeller shaft system.

Re-index the propeller shaft.

The driveline vibrates at 80 km/h (50 mph).

Inspect the propeller shaft for runout and for missing balance weights. Refer to Vibration Diagnosis.

The propeller shaft and axle flange paint marks are misaligned by more than 90 degrees.

Align the paint marks as close as possible.
