External Leakage Check for Chevrolet S10 Pickup - 2WD 1998
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
Perform the following procedure to help identify the exact
location of the leak:
- Turn the engine off.
- Wipe dry all the power steering system components.
- Wipe dry all the power steering system connections.
- Check the fluid reservoir.
- Add fluid if required. Refer to
Approximate Fluid Capacities
and
Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations
in Maintenance and Lubrication.
- The power steering system must be bleed if the reservoir is empty.
Refer to
Power Steering System Bleeding
.
- Start the engine.
- Have an assistant turn the steering wheel from stop to stop several
times while you search for leaks. Do not hold it at a stop for any length
of time or damage to the pump may occur.
- Find the exact location of the leak.
- Repair the leak.
