Tools Required
J 37043 Park Brake
Cable Release Tool
Removal Procedure
- Release the park brake,
if applied.
- Raise the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Loosen the adjuster nut at the equalizer.
- Remove the rear park brake
cable from the park brake connector.
- Remove the rear park brake
cable adjuster from the equalizer.
- Remove the brake drum.

- Remove the rear brake
shoes. Refer to
Brake Shoe Replacement
in Drum Brakes.
- Disconnect the rear park
brake cables from the chassis and rear axle housing retainers.
- Disconnect the rear park
brake cable from the park brake level, left side shown.
- Collapse the park brake cable locking finger at the backing plate.
- Remove the park brake cable from the backing plate.
- Remove the rear park brake cable from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
Important: When routing the cables through the guide loop, route the left side
cable first.
- Install the park brake cable in the chassis and rear axle housing retainers.
Important: When performing the following service procedure, ensure that the locking
fingers for the park brake cable are fully seated against the backing plate.
- Install the rear park brake cable in the backing plate.
- Install the park brake cable in the park brake level.
- Install the rear brake
shoes. Refer to Refer to
Brake Shoe Replacement
in Drum Brakes.
- Install the park brake cable to the equalizer.
- Install the park brake
cable in the park brake cable connector.
- Install the rear brake
drums. Refer to
Brake Drum Replacement
in Drum Brakes.
- Using a screwdriver (1),
adjust the rear brake shoes (2). Refer to
Drum Brake Adjustment
in Drum Brakes.
- Adjust the park brakes. Refer to
Park Brake Adjustment
.
- Lower the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.

Removal Procedure
Tools Required
J 37043 Park Brake
Cable Release Tool
- Release the park brake,
if applied.
- Raise the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Loosen the front cable at the equalizer.
- Using theJ 37043
(1), collapse the locking finger for
the rear park brake cable.
- Remove the rear park brake
cable from the connector.
- Remove the rear park brake cable from the equalizer.
- Using the J 37043
(1), collapse the locking finger for
the rear park brake cable.
- Slide the inner park brake cable to the rearward.
- Remove the park brake
cable from the frame retainers.
- Remove the park brake
cable from the rear axle housing retainers, if needed.
- Remove the park brake
cable from the park brake actuator.
- Using the J 37043
(1), collapse the locking tabs on the park brake cable.
- Remove the J 37043
(1) from the park brake cable.
- Remove the park brake
cable from the rear brake cable bracket.
Installation Procedure
Important: When installing the park brake cable in any of the retainers, ensure
that the locking tabs on the park brake cable are fully seated against the
retainer.
- Install the park brake
cable frame retainers.
- Install the park brake
cable in the rear axle housing retainers, if removed.
- Install the park brake
cable in the brake caliper bracket.
- Install the park brake cable on the park brake actuator.
- Install the park brake
cable on the equalizer
- Install the park brake
cable in the connector.
- Adjust the park brake. Refer to
Park Brake Adjustment
- Lower the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
