Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 38836 Bushing Installer and Clutch Arbor

  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting Caution in General Information.
  2. Remove the transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement.
  3. Mark the flywheel, cover plate, and pressure plate for installation alignment.

  4. Object Number: 34078  Size: SH
  5. InstallJ 38836 through the cover plate, pressure plate, and into the flywheel for support during plate removal.

  6. Object Number: 34060  Size: SH
  7. Remove the bolts and washers securing the clutch pressure plate and cover plate to the flywheel.
  8. RemoveJ 38836 and the plates from the flywheel.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 34078  Size: SH
  1. UsingJ 38836 for installation alignment, position the pressure plate and cover plate to the flywheel.

  2. Object Number: 34060  Size: SH
  3. Secure the plates to the flywheel with bolts and washers.
  4. • Use the marks made during removal to align the plates if using the old clutch assembly.

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

    • Tighten each bolt one turn at a time in order to avoid warping the clutch pressure plate cover. Use a criss-cross pattern for tightening the bolts.

    Tighten
    Tighten the pressure and cover plate bolts for the NV1500 transmission to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).

    Tighten
    Tighten the pressure and cover plate bolts for the NV3500 to 40 N·m (29 lb ft).

  5. RemoveJ 38836 from the clutch plates.
  6. Install the transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Manual Transmission or Transmission Replacement in Automatic Transmission.
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8. Test the transmission and clutch system for proper operation.
