  1. Place the transmission in Park (A/T) or actuate the clutch pedal (M/T).
  2. Move the ignition switch to the START position.
  3. Measure the voltage between the starter solenoid terminal S and an engine ground.

Is the voltage reading greater than the specified value?

12.0 V

  1. Remove the STARTER relay from the underhood bussed electrical center (UBEC).
  2. Connect a test lamp from the STARTER relay socket cavity 30 to ground.

Does the test lamp light?

  1. Disconnect the PPL (6) wire from the starter solenoid terminal S.
  2. Connect a self-powered test lamp from the STARTER relay socket cavity 87 to the starter solenoid end of the PPL (6) wire.

Does the test lamp light?

  1. Connect the PPL (6) wire at the starter solenoid.
  2. Connect a self-powered test lamp between the STARTER relay socket cavity 86 to ground.

Does the test lamp light?

  1. Place the transmission in Park (A/T) or actuate the clutch pedal (M/T).
  2. Move the ignition switch to the START position.
  3. Measure the voltage between the STARTER relay socket cavity 85 to ground.

Is the voltage reading greater than the specified value?

Is the vehicle equipped with a manual transmission?

  1. Disconnect the clutch pedal position switch connector.
  2. Move the ignition switch to the START position.
  3. Measure the voltage between the clutch pedal position switch connector cavity A to ground.

Is the voltage reading greater than the specified value?

12.0 V

  1. Engage the park brake.
  2. Actuate the clutch pedal with the transmission in Neutral.
  3. Connect a fused jumper between the manual transmission clutch starter switch connector cavities A and C.
  4. Move the ignition switch to the START position.

Does the engine crank?

  1. Disconnect the transmission range switch connector.
  2. Move the ignition switch to the START position.
  3. Measure the voltage between the transmission range switch connector C1 cavity E and ground.

Is the voltage reading greater than the specified value?

12.0 V

  1. Connect a fused jumper between transmission range switch connector C1 cavities E and G.
  2. Move the ignition switch to the START position.

Does the engine crank?

  1. Move the ignition switch to the START position.
  2. Measure the voltage between the ignition switch connector C211 cavity D1 to ground.

Is the voltage reading greater than value?

  1. Clean the starter motor mounting surfaces and the bolts.
  2. Repeat the test.
  3. If the starter does not operate, replace the starter. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement .

Install the STARTER relay. Repair the open in the RED (19) wire between the battery MaxiFuse® B stud and the STARTER relay.

Install the STARTER relay, and repair the open in the PPL (6) wire between the STARTER relay and the starter solenoid.

Install the STARTER relay, and repair the open in the BLK (150) wire between the STARTER relay and ground G102.

Replace the STARTER relay.

  1. Adjust the manual transmission clutch starter switch.
  2. Repeat the test.
  3. If the starter does not operate, replace the manual transmission clutch starter switch.

Repair the open in the PPL (1035) wire between the manual transmission clutch start switch and the STARTER relay.

Repair the open in the PPL (1035) wire between the transmission range switch and the STARTER relay.

  1. Check for an open in the YEL (5) wire between the ignition switch and the UBEC.
  2. If OK, repair the open in the PPL (806) wire between the UBEC and the manual transmission clutch start switch (M/T) or the transmission range switch (A/T).
