Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 346145  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the vacuum brake booster hose.
  2. Remove the air cleaner outlet resonator. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Resonator Replacement in Engine Controls.
  3. Remove the accelerator control cable from the throttle body. Refer to Accelerator Control Cable Replacement in Engine Controls.
  4. Remove the cruise control cable from the throttle bracket. Refer to Cruise Control Cable Replacement (2.2L) in Cruise Controls.

  6. Remove the spark plug wire harness retainer from the heater hose pipe.
  7. Remove the spark plug wires from the spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  8. Object Number: 175505  Size: SH
  9. Remove the EGR valve pipe from the EGR valve adapter and the intake manifold.
  10. Remove the EGR valve. Refer to Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve Replacement in Engine Controls.
  11. Remove the throttle body. Refer to Throttle Body Assembly Replacement (SFI) in Engine Controls.

  13. Remove the electrical connector for the fuel injectors from the bracket.
  14. Remove the engine wiring harness bracket at the rear of the engine using the following procedure:
  15. 11.1. Loosen the bolt at the rear of the cylinder head.
    11.2. Remove the two bolts that secure the bracket to the valve rocker arm cover.
    11.3. Slide the bracket off of the bolt at the rear of the cylinder head.

  16. Remove the bolts and the following brackets:
  17. • Air cleaner outlet resonator bracket
    • Fuel injector electrical connector bracket
  18. Heater hose pipe bracket bolt and the heater hose pipe
  19. Remove the valve rocker arm cover bolts and stud.

    Important: The valve rocker arm cover gasket is reusable. Only replace the valve rocker arm cover gasket if it is damaged.

  21. Remove the valve rocker arm cover.
  22. Clean all sealing surfaces. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Cleaning and Inspection .

Installation Procedure

  1. Clean the sealing surfaces where the cylinder head and the rocker arm cover meet. Use a suitable cleaning solvent.
  2. Inspect the sealing flanges of the rocker arm cover for distortion.
  3. Install a new rocker arm cover gasket in the groove around the rocker arm cover, if the old gasket was removed.
  4. Install the valve rocker arm cover to the cylinder head.

  6. Install the valve rocker arm cover bolts and the fuel injector electrical connector bracket .
  7. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  8. Tighten the rocker arm cover bolts and stud in sequence.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the stud and bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  10. Install the heater hose pipe and the gaskets.
  11. Install the heater hose pipe bracket.
  12. Install the air cleaner outlet resonator bracket and bolts.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the heater hose pipe bolt and the air cleaner outlet resonator bracket bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  14. Install the engine wiring harness bracket to the rear of the engine by using the following procedure:
  15. 10.1. Slide the bracket over the bolt at the rear of the cylinder head.
    10.2. Install the two bolts that secure the bracket to the valve rocker arm cover.
  16. Tighten the bolts in the following order:
  17. Tighten

    1. Tighten the two bolts to the valve rocker arm cover to 10 N·m (89 lb in).
    2. Tighten the bolt at the rear of the cylinder head to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).
  18. Install the electrical connector for the fuel injectors to the bracket.

  20. Install the EGR valve. Refer to Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve Replacement in Engine Controls.
  21. Install the EGR valve pipe with new gaskets and the bolts to the EGR valve adapter and the intake manifold.
  22. Tighten

        • Tighten the EGR valve pipe to the EGR valve adapter bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).
        • Tighten the EGR valve pipe to intake manifold bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).
  23. Install the throttle body. Refer to Throttle Body Assembly Replacement (SFI) in Engine Controls.
  24. Install the accelerator control cable to the mounting bracket and throttle body. Refer to Accelerator Control Cable Replacement in Engine Controls.
  25. Install the cruise control cable to the throttle bracket. Refer to Cruise Control Cable Replacement (2.2L) in Cruise Controls.

  27. Install the spark plug wires to the spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  28. Install the spark plug wire harness retainer to the heater hose pipe.
  29. Install the air cleaner outlet resonator. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Resonator Replacement in Engine Controls.

  31. Connect the vacuum brake booster hose.
