Models: | 2003 Chevrolet SSR |
The purpose of this service bulletin is to introduce the 2003 Chevrolet SSR and describe the actions your Service Department will need to take to ensure that your dealership is able to fully service this exciting new model.
The Chevy SSR is like no other vehicle on the road today -- rich in Chevrolet heritage but very innovative. Its power retractable hard top that , with the touch of one button, separates and stows vertically without compromising the SSR's cargo carrying capability. No other vehicle can offer this much fun and function in a single package.
The SSR incorporates a body-on-frame construction using the Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT as its starting point. All of the major body panels are stamped steel, including the large fenders. The cargo area is integral to the body structure giving it a more car-like appearance.
Important: The SSR is not equipped with hood struts but rather a hood prop rod. Be sure to properly stow the prop rod prior to closing the hood.
The SSR features a new all-aluminum version of the proven Vortec 5300 engine that is coupled to the Hydra-Matic 4L60-E electronically controlled 4-speed automatic transmission with automatic overdrive. This 5.3L V8 engine can produce 300 horsepower @ 5200 rpm and 331 lb ft of torque @ 4000 rpm. The SSR has rear wheel drive and features a TORSEN Traction Differential on the rear axle. The rear axle ratio for the SSR is 3.73:1.
The SSR has a lower stance and wider track than most standard vehicles. The modified TrailBlazer EXT chassis, steering, suspension and brake components provide for a lower center of gravity, increased stability and flatter cornering. The SSR also comes with four-wheel disc brakes, ABS (anti-lock brake system) and the standard traction control system.
The SSR's unique sterling silver painted aluminum wheels and Goodyear Eagle RS-A (Rally Sport-Asymmetric) all season performance tires were designed to meet the vehicle's specific targets for high levels of both ride quality and handling capability. At the front are 19-inch wheels with P255/45R19 tires. At the rear are 20-inch wheels with P295/40R20. Due to this difference in sizes between the front and rear, the tires should not be rotated. Each tire and wheel should be used only in the position it is in. In addition, no spare tire is included. A tire inflation kit is supplied instead.
Important: Due to the low tire profile and the flangeless wheel design, the SSR wheels may be easily damaged in car washes or on transport vehicles that utilize a rail to guide the vehicle through. It is strongly suggested that prior to using any automatic car wash, the car wash manager be consulted to determine whether damage is likely to occur. Otherwise a rail-less car wash or other means of washing should be utilized.
The SSR is equipped with a tire inflator kit similar to the one supplied with the Z06 Corvette. It is located behind the driver's seat and contains an air compressor, tire sealant and air pressure gauge.
The fully automatic retractable hardtop system transforms the SSR from coupe to convertible in less than 30 seconds. The top is operated by pressing and holding a single button located on the console. The retractable/convertible top splits and stores vertically behind the passenger compartment without intruding into the rear cargo area. The top may not operate if the battery has lost power or the cargo area cover is ajar. Refer to the Owners Manual for the retractable hardtop operation information.
The SSR's hard cargo cover can be locked or removed. The cargo area cover can be opened automatically by either pressing the cargo cover button on the remote keyless entry transmitter (key fob) or by depressing the cargo cover release button located in the glove box. The cargo area cover can also be opened manually. Refer to the Owners Manual for more information.
Important: To close the cargo area cover:
The SSR control modules communicate with each other over the Class 2 serial data line to provide the information necessary for the operation of electrical devices. These control modules include the following:
• | Audio Amplifier: (Optional) Sends boosted low level audio signals received from the radio to the speakers. |
• | Remote Control Door Lock Receiver (Keyless Entry): Receives the key fob signal that identifies the driver and the door unlock request. This RCDLR Module then interfaces with the Body Control Module (BCM) which actually sends the command to unlock the doors, including the rear cargo compartment, once the system has authorized entry. |
• | Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM): Controls the driver and passenger dual-stage front air bags, seat side impact air bags and seat belt pretensioners. |
• | Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC): Performs 168 occupant information functions. this includes 111 messages in the Driver Information Center (DIC), gages, telltales and chimes. |
• | Roof and Door Module (RDM): Receives signals regarding the position of the retractable top and its components and the vehicle condition (in/out of PARK, vehicle speed, cargo cover) at any given time. The RDM also controls the power windows. |
• | Memory Seat Module (MSM): Provides the driver seat with power positioning control, two-zone lumbar control and memory settings for two different drivers. |
The BCM is basically the heart of the electrical system. It interfaces with other modules via the Class 2 serial data link and controls many of the basic vehicle functions. These functions include:
• | Automatic headlamps |
• | Battery Rundown Protection |
• | Daytime Running Lamps (DRL) |
• | Passlock theft deterrent |
• | Power door locks, rear cargo compartment latch |
• | Retained Accessory Power (RAP) |
• | Theater dimming of interior lights |
J 45999 Cup/Coinholder Removal
Notice: J 45999 must be used when removing the cupholder or coinholder. Using any other tool may result in damage to the RH knee bolster trim panel.
• | Paint -- The original equipment paint is supplied by PPG. Refinish paint is available from local distributors. |
• | Audio System -- The radio, CD player are serviced by SPECMO (in Canada, ACDelco Radio Centres). |
• | Cluster -- The IP cluster is serviced by SPECMO (in Canada, ACDelco I & D Centres). |
Performing a quality pre-delivery inspection is one of the most important functions your dealership can do for the customer. Most customers consider the condition of their new vehicle during delivery as a direct reflection of your dealership and your service department. A quality PDI is essential to improving a customer's perception of your dealership and increasing his/her satisfaction with their new vehicle.
Important: The SSR is not equipped with hood struts but rather a hood prop rod. Be sure to properly stow the prop rod prior to closing the hood.
In addition to the standard PDI form, the following items require special attention:
