Park Brake May Not Release After Engagement (Replace Console Bracket)

Subject:Park Brake May Not Release After Engagement (Replace Console Bracket)

Models:2003-2004 Chevrolet SSR



Condition

Some customers may comment that the park brake will not release after applying.

Cause

The park brake assembly may be contacting the console bracket causing a binding condition.

Correction

Replace the console bracket using the following procedure:

  1. Cycle the folding top to the open position.
  2. Position the passenger seat all the way forward.
  3. Open the hood and disconnect the positive cable from the junction block and tape the cable eyelet.
  4. Remove the floor console. Refer To Console Replacement (Document ID #1384622).
  5. Remove the floor shifter control. Refer To Floor Shifter Control Replacement (Document ID #871532).
  6. Remove the three retainer nuts, the electrical connector and the SIR module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Sensing And Diagnostic Module Replacement.
  7. Remove the remote control door lock receiver and electrical connector.
  8. Remove the Body Control Module (BCM). Refer To Body Control Module Replacement (Document ID #1366924).
  9. Remove the console electrical center or junction block. Refer To Console Electrical Center Or Junction Block Replacement (Document ID #1392495).
  10. Release the park brake, if applied, and remove the three retaining bolts that retain the park brake assembly.
  11. Remove the park brake cable from the bracket, the electrical connector and park brake assembly and place it to the side.
  12. Remove the seven floor bracket retaining nuts and the bracket from the vehicle.
  13. Install the new bracket and retaining nuts.
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 22 N·m(16 lb ft).

  15. Install the park brake cable to the bracket, the electrical connector and the park brake assembly.
  16. Install the three bolts for the park brake assembly and tighten.
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the mounting bolts to 25 N·m(18 lb ft).

  18. Install the console electrical center or junction block. Refer To Console Electrical Or Junction Block Replacement (Document ID #1392495).
  19. Install the BCM. Refer to Body Control Module Replacement (Document ID #1366924).
  20. Install the remote control door lock receiver and electrical connector.
  21. Install the three retaining nuts, the electrical connector and the SIR module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Sensing And Diagnostic Module Replacement.
  22. Install the floor shifter controller. Refer To Floor Shifter Control Replacement (Document ID #871532).
  23. Install the Console. Refer To Console Replacement (Document ID #1384622).
  24. Remove the tape and connect the positive cable to the junction block and tighten the nut.
  25. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 6 N·m(53 lb in).

  26. Place the passenger seat back to its original position.
  27. Close the roof.
