Removal Procedure
- Raise the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Drain the rear axle. Refer to
Rear Axle Lubricant Replacement
.
- Remove the rear axle housing cover bolts (1).
Important: Do not nick or cut the rear axle housing cover gasket.
- Remove the rear axle housing cover (2) from the axle housing.
- Drain the axle lubricant into a suitable container.
Installation Procedure
- Inspect the rear axle cover gasket for nicks, cuts or damage that may
cause the gasket to not seal properly. If any of these conditions exist, replace the
gasket.
- If the gasket is to be reused, clean the rear axle housing cover gasket
a suitable cleaner.
- Clean the rear axle housing cover gasket surface and the rear axle housing
gasket surface with a suitable cleaner.
- Install the rear axle housing cover gasket
and the rear axle housing cover (2).
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
- Install the rear axle housing cover bolts (1).
Tighten
Tighten the rear axle housing cover bolts in a crosswise pattern to 30 N·m
(20 lb ft).
- Fill the rear axle with axle lubricant. Use the proper fluid. Refer to
Rear Axle Lubricant Replacement
.
- Lower the vehicle.
