J 44586 Power Steering Gear Oil Seal Remover/Installer

Removal Procedure

    Notice: Do not start the vehicle with any power steering gear inlet or outlet hoses disconnected. When disconnected, plug or cap all openings of components. Failure to do so could result in contamination or loss of power steering fluid and damage to the system.

  1. Install the drain pan under the vehicle.

  2. Object Number: 841009  Size: SH
  3. Disconnect the power steering pressure (1) and return hose (3) from the power steering pump (2).
  4. Raise and support the vehicle with suitable safety stands. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

  5. Object Number: 687441  Size: SH
  6. Disconnect the power steering hose assembly from the power steering cooler.
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8. Remove the electronic control module (ECM) from the bracket and position out of the way. Refer to Engine Control Module Replacement in Engine Controls - 6.0L.
  9. Raise the vehicle.

  11. Remove power steering hose assembly (1) to power steering gear mounting bolt (2).
  12. Disconnect the power steering hose assembly from the power steering gear (3).

  13. Object Number: 841004  Size: SH
  14. Remove the power steering hose assembly (1) front bracket mounting bolt (3) from the frame.
  15. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the retaining clip.
  16. Remove the power steering hose assembly rear bracket mounting bolt (2).
  17. Remove the power steering hose assembly from the vehicle.
  18. Notice: Clean the power steering gear inlet and outlet ports thoroughly of any debris. Failure to do so could result in contamination and damage to the power steering system components.

  19. Remove the power steering gear oil seals from the power steering gear using the J 44586 .

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the power steering gear oil seals to the power steering gear using the J 44586 .

  2. Object Number: 841004  Size: SH
  3. Install the power steering hose assembly (1) to the vehicle.
  4. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  5. Install the power steering hose assembly rear bracket (2) mounting bolt.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  7. Connect the power steering pressure hose retaining clip.
  8. Install the power steering hose assembly front bracket mounting bolt (3).

  9. Object Number: 841009  Size: SH
  10. Connect the power steering pressure (1) and return hoses (3) to the power steering pump (2).
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the fittings to 25 N·m (18 lb in).

  12. Install the ECM. Refer to Engine Control Module Replacement in Engine Controls - 6.0L.
  13. Raise and support the vehicle with suitable safety stands. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

  14. Object Number: 687441  Size: SH
  15. Connect the power steering hose assembly to the power steering cooler.

  16. Object Number: 841001  Size: SH
  17. Connect the power steering hose assembly (1) to the power steering gear (3).
  18. Install the power steering hose assembly to the power steering gear with the mounting bolt (2).
  19. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  20. Lower the vehicle.
