Early production 2005 Chevrolet SSR vehicles equipped with a manual transmission were built with an axle assembly equipped with a fill hole located forward, by the nose of the pinion. When servicing this axle assembly, a technician who is attempting to add axle fluid through the fill hole will find that the fluid runs out of the hole after a few seconds, and will give the appearance of being full when it is not.
A new rear axle cover kit with a fill plug located in the cover has been released to aid in the filling of these assemblies. When servicing one of these early production (refer to VIN breakpoint above) rear axles, use Cover Kit, P/N 19133285. Refer to Rear Axle Housing Cover and Gasket Replacement (SI Document ID# 1243287).
