Rear Axle Lubricant Replacement 8.6 Inch Axle

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  2. Clean the area around the rear axle fill plug.
  3. Remove the rear axle fill plug.
  4. Remove the rear axle cover. Refer to Rear Axle Housing Cover and Gasket Replacement .
  5. Drain the lubricant into a suitable container.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the rear axle cover. Refer to Rear Axle Housing Cover and Gasket Replacement .
  2. Fill the rear axle with axle lubricant. Use the proper fluid. Refer to Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers and Approximate Fluid Capacities .
  3. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  4. Install the rear axle fill plug.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the rear axle fill plug to 33 N·m (24 lb ft).

  6. Lower the vehicle.

Rear Axle Lubricant Replacement 9.5 Inch LD Axle

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 1689710  Size: SH
  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  2. Remove the drain plug.
  3. Drain the lubricant into a suitable container.

  4. Object Number: 1689720  Size: SH
  5. Remove the fill plug.

Installation Procedure

    Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 1689710  Size: SH
  1. Install the drain plug.
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the drain plug to 33 N·m (24 lb ft).

    Important: Add the limited slip axle lubricant additive to the axle before filling the axle with axle lubricant.

  3. Fill the axle with limited slip axle lubricant additive and lubricant. For the proper amount, refer to Approximate Fluid Capacities.
  4. Fill the rear drive axle with axle lubricant.
  5. • Use the proper fluid, refer to Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers .
    • For the proper capacity, refer to Approximate Fluid Capacities .

  6. Install the fill plug.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the fill plug to 33 N·m (24 lb ft).

  8. Lower the vehicle.
