GM Service Manual Online
For 1990-2009 cars only

Caution: Refer to SIR Inflator Module Disposal Caution in the Preface section.

Caution: Refer to Eye Protection Caution in the Preface section.

Caution: Refer to SRS Handling Caution in the Preface section.

Caution: After deployment, the metal surfaces of the SIR component may be very hot. To help avoid a fire or personal injury:

   • Allow sufficient time for cooling before touching any metal surface of the SIR component.
   • Do not place the deployed SIR component near any flammable objects.

Deploy the air bags before disposing of them. This includes those in a whole vehicle being scrapped.

If the vehicle is still within the warranty period, contact the General Motors regional service manager for approval or special instructions before deploying the air bag modules.

Air Bag Module Deployment - Inside Vehicle

Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in the Preface section.

  1. Disconnect both battery cables and place the battery at least 10 meters (32.8 feet) from the vehicle.

  2. Object Number: 1223230 Size: SH

CAUTION: Be careful when you handle a sensing and diagnostic module (SDM). Do not strike or jolt the SDM. Before applying power to the SDM:

       • Remove any dirt, grease, etc. from the mounting surface
       • Position the SDM horizontally on the mounting surface
       • Point the arrow on the SDM toward the front of the vehicle
       • Tighten all of the SDM fasteners and SDM bracket fasteners to the specified torque value
Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause air bag deployment, personal injury, or unnecessary SIR system repairs.

  3. Remove the lower cover from the steering column.
  4. At the lower steering column, cut the 2 wires leading from the supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) harness to the coil spring.
  5. Strip 13 mm (0.5 in) of insulation from the ends of the wires leading to the coil spring.
  6. Use 2 additional wires, each at least 10 meters (33 feet) long, to reach from the deployment battery to the air bag module.
  7. Strip 13 mm (0.5 in) of insulation from the ends of these 2 additional wires.
  8. Twist the 2 wires together at one end.

  9. Object Number: 1223232 Size: SH
  10. Place the twisted ends of the 2 wires near the deployment battery. Do not connect the wires to the battery at this time.
  11. Using the free ends of the 10 meters (33 feet) wires leading to the coil spring, make 2 splices, one at each wire from the air bag module.
  12. Wrap the splices with insulating tape.
  13. Now that the free ends of the 10 meters (33 feet) wires are spliced to the air bag module wires, and the ends that are twisted together are near the deployment battery, clear the area.
  14. Untwist the wires that are near the deployment battery.
  15. Touch one wire to the positive battery terminal and touch the other wire to the negative battery terminal. The air bag will deploy.
  16. Repeat the procedure for the passenger air bag, cutting the wires to the passenger air bag module instead of the wires leading to the coil spring.
  17. Strip 13 mm (0.5 in) of insulation from the ends of the wires leading to the passenger air bag module.
  18. Use 2 additional wires, each at least 10 meters (33 feet) long, to reach from the deployment battery to the passenger air bag module.
  19. Strip 13 mm (0.5 in) of insulation from the ends of these 2 additional wires.
  20. Twist the 2 wires together at one end.
  21. Place the twisted ends of the 2 wires near the deployment battery. Do not connect the wires to the battery at this time.
  22. Using the free ends of the 10 meter (33 feet) wires to the passenger air bag module, make 2 splices, one at each wire from the air bag module.
  23. Wrap the splices with insulating tape.
  24. Now that the free ends of the 10 meters (33 feet) wires are spliced to the passenger air bag module wires, and the ends that are twisted together are near the deployment battery, clear the area.
  25. Untwist the wires that are near the deployment battery.
  26. Touch one wire to the positive battery terminal and touch the other wire to the negative battery terminal. The passenger air bag will deploy.
  27. Using the proper precautions, dispose of the deployed air bag.

Air Bag Module Deployment - Outside of Vehicle

Deploy all intact air bag modules that have been:

    • Removed from a scrapped vehicle
    • Found to be defective
    • Found to have been damaged during transit, storage, or service

Caution: Refer to SIR Inflator Module Disposal Caution in the Preface section.

Caution: Refer to Eye Protection Caution in the Preface section.

Caution: After deployment, the metal surfaces of the SIR component may be very hot. To help avoid a fire or personal injury:

       • Allow sufficient time for cooling before touching any metal surface of the SIR component.
       • Do not place the deployed SIR component near any flammable objects.

  1. Position the air bag module face up, on flat ground outdoors, at least 10 meters (33 feet) from any obstacles or people.
  2. Place a vehicle battery at least 10 meters (33 feet) away from the air bag module.
  3. Deploy the air bag module by referring to the deployment procedure of Air Bag Module Deployment -- Inside of Vehicle.
  4. Using the proper precautions, dispose of the deployed air bag.

Deployed Air Bag Module Disposal Procedure

Caution: Refer to SIR Inflator Module Disposal Caution in the Preface section.

Caution: Refer to Eye Protection Caution in the Preface section.

Caution: Refer to SIR Inflator Module Disposal Caution in the Preface section.

Caution: After deployment, the metal surfaces of the SIR component may be very hot. To help avoid a fire or personal injury:

   • Allow sufficient time for cooling before touching any metal surface of the SIR component.
   • Do not place the deployed SIR component near any flammable objects.

Deploy an air bag before disposing of it. This includes those in a whole vehicle being scrapped.

If the vehicle is still within the warranty period, contact the General Motors regional service manager for approval or special instructions before deploying an air bag module.

Deployed air bag modules should be disposed of in the same manner as any other scrap parts, with the addition of the following steps:

    Object Number: 1223233 Size: SH
  1. Place the deployed air bag in a sturdy plastic bag.
  2. Seal the plastic bag securely.
  3. Wash your hands and rinse them with water after handling a deployed air bag.
