Tools Required

    • 09915-64510 (09916-14510) Valve Spring Compressor or equivalent
    • EN 46571 (09916-44910) Valve Guide Remover
    • EN 47518 (09916-48210) Valve Spring Compressor Attachment

Disassembly Procedure

    Caution: Refer to Safety Glasses Caution in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 1224639 Size: SH

    Caution: Valve springs can be tightly compressed. Use care when removing the retainers and plugs. Personal injury could result.

    Caution: In order to avoid being burned, do not service the exhaust system while it is still hot. Service the system when it is cool.

  1. Remove the cylinder head with the intake manifold and the exhaust manifold attached. Refer to Cylinder Head Replacement .
  2. Remove the intake manifold main bracket bolts (2).
  3. Remove the intake manifold main bracket (1).

  4. Remove the distributor and case bolts and nuts (1).
  5. Remove the distributor and case (2).
  6. Remove the gasket (3).

    7. Object Number: 1224643 Size: SH
  7. Remove the intake manifold nuts (2).
  8. Remove the intake manifold (1).
  9. Inspect the intake manifold gasket for cracks or damage.

    10. Object Number: 1224644 Size: SH
  10. Remove the exhaust manifold heat shield bolts (5).
  11. Remove the exhaust manifold heat shield  (4).
  12. Remove the exhaust manifold bolts and nuts (1).
  13. Remove the exhaust manifold (2).
  14. Remove the exhaust manifold gasket (3).
  15. Inspect the exhaust manifold gasket for cracks or damage.
  16. Remove the spark plugs.

  17. Remove the rocker arm bolts (1).
  18. Remove the rocker arm spring (4)
  19. Remove the rocker arm shaft (3).
  20. Remove the rocker arm (2).

    21. Object Number: 1224646 Size: SH

    Notice: Use extreme care when removing the camshaft not to nick, scratch, or damage the camshaft lobes or bearing surfaces.

  21. Remove the camshaft screw (4).
  22. Remove the camshaft plate (3).
  23. Remove the camshaft (1).
  24. Remove the camshaft front oil seal from housing hole (2).

  25. Using the EN 47518  (1) with the 09915-64510  (2), compress the valve springs (3).
  26. Remove the valve keepers (4).

    27. Object Number: 1224649 Size: SH
  27. Remove the valve spring retainer and valve springs (1).
  28. Remove the valves (2).

    29. Object Number: 1224651 Size: SH

    Important: Do not reuse the removed oil seals. And the removed oil seals should be replaced by new one.

  29. Remove the valve stem oil seals (1).
  30. Remove the valve spring seat (2).

    31. Object Number: 1224652 Size: SH

    Important: The removed valve guide should be replaced by new one of oversized. Do not reuse the removed valve guide.

  31. Position the EN 46571 on the valve guide.
  32. Hammer and remove the valve guide from the combustion chamber to the direction of the installed valve spring using the EN 46571 .
