Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 24319-01 Universal Steering Linkage Puller

  1. Set the wheels straight ahead with the steering wheel in the lock position.

  2. Object Number: 293548  Size: SH
  3. Remove the evaporator pipe to shroud retaining bolts.
  4. Position the evaporator pipe rearward.

  5. Object Number: 293947  Size: SH
  6. Disconnect the overflow tube from the radiator.
  7. Position the overflow tube away from the radiator shroud.
  8. Remove the upper radiator shroud. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement in Engine Cooling.

  9. Object Number: 293950  Size: SH
  10. Mark the intermediate shaft.
  11. Remove the intermediate shaft to power steering gear bolt.
  12. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the power steering gear by prying outward.

  13. Object Number: 293952  Size: SH
  14. Position a drain pan under the steering gear box.
  15. Disconnect the return lines and the pressure lines.
  16. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

  17. Object Number: 293951  Size: SH
  18. Remove the front cover shield.
  19. Remove the bolts from the lower shroud.
  20. Position the lower shroud upward in order to gain clearance.
  21. Remove the nut from the pitman arm ball stud at the relay rod.
  22. Disconnect the ball stud using the J 24319-01 .
  23. Position the relay rod downward.

  25. Remove the power steering gear lower bolts.
  26. Allow clearance at the wheel well for the power steering gear upper bolts.
  27. Loosen the power steering gear upper bolts.
  28. Remove the power steering gear from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 293953  Size: SH
  1. Install the power steering gear onto the vehicle.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the power steering gear upper bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the power steering gear upper bolts to 135 N·m (100 lb ft).

  5. Install the power steering gear lower bolts.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the power steering gear lower bolts to 135 N·m (100 lb ft).

  7. Install the pitman arm to the relay rod with the nut.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the pitman arm to relay rod nut to 62 N·m (46 lb ft).

  9. Reposition and tighten the lower shroud. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement in Engine Cooling.

  11. Install the front cover shield.
  12. Lower the vehicle.

  13. Object Number: 293952  Size: SH
  14. Connect the return lines and the pressure lines to the power steering gear.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the return lines and the pressure lines to 33 N·m (24 lb ft).

  16. Connect the intermediate shaft to the power steering gear with the bolt.
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the intermediate shaft to power steering gear bolt to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  18. Install the upper radiator shroud. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement in Engine Cooling.

  19. Object Number: 293547  Size: SH
  20. Reposition the surge tank overflow tube onto the radiator.
  21. Secure the surge tank overflow tube onto the radiator.

  22. Object Number: 293548  Size: SH
  23. Reposition the evaporator pipe onto the radiator and install the bolts.
  24. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Bleeding the Power Steering System.
