HVAC Compressor Clutch Does Not Engage

Perform a CCOT System A/C diagnosis. Refer to CCOT System A/C Diagnosis .

Is the repair complete?

System OK

Go to Step 2

  1. Disconnect the connector at the A/C compressor clutch.
  2. Start the engine.
  3. Adjust the mode control dial at the HVAC control module to the A/C floor position.
  4. Adjust the temperature control dial on the HVAC control module to maximum cooling.
  5. Place the front blower switch in the HI position.
  6. Connect a self-powered test lamp from the A/C compressor clutch connector cavity A to ground.

Does the test lamp light?

--

Go to Step 4

Locate and repair the open in CKT 150 (BLK) between the A/C compressor clutch and ground.

Is the repair complete?

--

System OK

--

  1. Remove the A/C compressor clutch relay from its socket.
  2. Connect a self-powered test lamp between the A/C compressor clutch relay cavity A6 and the A/C compressor clutch connector cavity B.

Does the test lamp light?

--

Go to Step 6

Locate and repair the open in CKT 59 (DK GRN) between the underhood fuse-relay center and the A/C compressor clutch.

Is the repair complete?

--

System OK

With the ignition switch in the ON position, connect a test lamp from the A/C compressor clutch relay cavity B4 to ground.

Does the test lamp light?

--

Locate and repair the open in CKT 1240 (ORN) from the A/C compressor fuse to the A/C compressor clutch relay in the underhood fuse-relay center.

Is the repair complete?

--

System OK

With the ignition switch in the ON position, connect a test lamp from the A/C compressor clutch relay cavity A4 to ground.

Does the test lamp light?

--

Locate and repair the open in CKT 639 (PNK) from the IGN E fuse to the A/C compressor clutch relay in the underhood fuse-relay center.

Is the repair complete?

--

System OK

  1. Disconnect connector C3 at the powertrain control module (PCM) in vehicles with diesel engines, or the vehicle control module (VCM) in vehicles with gasoline engines.
  2. Connect a self-powered test lamp between the A/C compressor clutch relay cavity B6 and the PCM connector C3 cavity D5 or the VCM connector C3 cavity 1.

Does the test lamp light?

Locate and repair the open in CKT 459 (DK GRN/WHT) between the A/C compressor clutch relay and the PCM or VCM.

Is the repair complete?

--

System OK

  1. Replace the A/C compressor clutch relay in the socket.
  2. Connect a fused jumper wire between the PCM connector C3 cavity D5 in vehicles with diesel engines or the VCM connector C3 cavity 1 in vehicles with gasoline engines to ground.
  3. Connect a test lamp from the A/C compressor clutch connector B to ground.

Does the test lamp light?

Replace the A/C compressor clutch relay.

  2. Connect a self-powered test lamp between connector C3 cavity 17 and ground.

Locate and repair the open in CKT 451 (BLK/WHT) between the VCM connector C3 cavity 17 and ground.

Is the repair complete?

  2. Connect a test lamp between the PCM connector C1 cavity C2 and the ground.

  1. Disconnect the connector at the A/C compressor high pressure cut-out switch.
  2. Connect a self-powered test lamp between the PCM connector C1 cavity C2 (diesel) or the VCM connector C3 cavity 25 and the A/C compressor high pressure cut-out switch connector cavity A.

Does the test lamp light?

Locate and repair the open in CKT 762 (DK GRN/WHT) between the A/C compressor high pressure switch and the PCM or VCM.

Is the repair complete?

Connect a self-powered test lamp between pins A and B of the A/C compressor high pressure cut-out switch.

Does the test lamp light?

Determine if the vehicle is diesel or gas powered.

Is the vehicle diesel powered?

Replace the A/C compressor high pressure cut-out switch.

  1. Disconnect the connector at the A/C compressor cycling switch.
  2. Connect a self-powered test lamp from the A/C compressor cycling switch connector cavity B and the A/C compressor low pressure cut-out switch connector cavity B.

Does the test lamp light?

Locate and repair the open in CKT 603 (DK GRN) between the A/C compressor cycling switch and the A/C compressor high pressure cut-out switch.

Is the repair complete?

  1. Disconnect the connector at the A/C compressor high pressure cut-out switch and C1 of the HVAC module.
  2. Connect a self-powered test lamp from cavity B of the A/C compressor high pressure cut-out switch and C1 cavity A of the HVAC connector.

Locate and repair the open in CKT 66 (LT GRN) between the A/C compressor high pressure cutout switch and the HVAC module.

Is the repair complete?

  1. Reconnect the connectors at the PCM or VCM.
  2. Reconnect the connector at the A/C compressor clutch.
  3. Connect a fused jumper wire from the A/C compressor cycling switch connector cavity B and battery voltage.
  4. Connect a self-powered test lamp at pins A and B of the A/C compressor cycling switch.
  5. Monitor for compressor cycling. Refer to CCOT A/C System in Heater, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.

Replace the A/C compressor cycling switch.

  1. Remove the jumper wire from battery voltage to the A/C compressor cycling switch connector cavity B.
  2. Disconnect connector C1 at the HVAC control module.
  3. Connect a self-powered test lamp between the HVAC control module connector C1 cavity A and the A/C compressor cycling switch connector cavity A.

Does the test lamp light?

Locate and repair the open in CKT 66 (LT GRN) between the HVAC control module and the A/C compressor cycling switch.

Is the repair complete?

  1. Reconnect connector at the A/C cycling switch.
  2. Connect a test lamp between the HVAC control module connector C1 cavity C and ground.

Does the test lamp light?
