Fuel Gauge Always Indicates Empty Gasoline

  1. Disconnect the connector at the fuel pump and sender.
  2. Place the ignition switch in RUN.

Does the fuel gauge indicate empty?

Go to Step 3

Go to Step 2

Replace the fuel pump and sender.

Is the repair complete?

System OK

  1. Place the ignition switch in OFF.
  2. Disconnect the connector at the instrument cluster.
  3. Connect a self-powered test lamp from the instrument cluster connector cavity 29 to ground.

Does the test lamp light?

Go to Step 4

Go to Step 5

Locate and repair the short to ground in the CKT 30 (PPL) wire between the instrument cluster and the vehicle control module (VCM).

Is the repair complete?

System OK

  1. Place the ignition switch in OFF.
  2. Disconnect the connector at the instrument cluster.
  3. Connect a self-powered test lamp from the VCM connector C3 cavity 13 to ground.

Does the test lamp light?

Go to Step 7

Go to Step 6

Locate and repair the short to ground in the CKT 1589 (PPL/WHT) wire between the VCM and the fuel pump and sender.

Is the repair complete?

System OK

Replace the instrument cluster.

Is the repair complete?

System OK

  2. Disconnect the connector at the instrument cluster.
  3. Connect a self-powered test lamp from the instrument cluster connector cavity 29 to ground.

Does the test lamp light?

Go to Step 4
