Removal Procedure

Tool Required

J 33169 Clutch Alignment Tool

Important: Install the J 33169 or a used clutch drive gear in order to support the clutch.

Mark the flywheel, the clutch cover, and a clutch plate lug for alignment during installation.

  1. Remove the clutch cover bolts.
  2. Remove the clutch cover washers.

  3. Object Number: 101298  Size: SH
  4. Remove the clutch cover and the clutch disc.
  5. Remove the alignment tool.

  6. Clean all parts with a clean, water-dampened cloth in order to remove any fibers.

  7. Object Number: 101301  Size: SH
  8. Clean the flywheel housing with solvent. Wipe dry.
  9. Check the following parts for the conditions stated:
  10. • All contact surfaces for scoring and flatness. Use a straight edge. The disc plate must not exceed 0.508 mm (0.020 in).
    • Friction pads for the following conditions:
       • Scoring
       • Gouges
       • Loose rivets
       • Oil Soaks
    • All splines for nicks, burrs, and a sliding fit.
    • The clutch cover spring for bending and breaks.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 101298  Size: SH
  1. Install the clutch cover and the clutch disc.
  2. Important: Install the J 33169 or a used clutch drive gear in order to support the clutch cover and the clutch disc.

    Align the marks made during removal. If new, align the lightest part of the clutch cover (identified by a yellow dot) with the heaviest part of the flywheel (identified with an X.)

    Important: Tighten each bolt one turn at a time in order to avoid warping the clutch cover.

  3. Install the clutch cover to the flywheel with the washers and the bolts.
  4. Remove the clutch alignment tool.
  5. Tighten

        • Tighten the clutch cover to flywheel bolts (gasoline engine) to 40 N·m(29 lb ft).
        • Tighten the clutch cover to flywheel bolts (diesel engine) to 34 N·m(25 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
