Auxiliary Battery Negative Cable Replacement 4.3L, 4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L and 8.1L

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the auxiliary negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  2. Remove the auxiliary battery cable clips from the studs at the front of dash.
  3. Remove the engine sight shield. Refer to Upper Intake Manifold Sight Shield Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 4.8 L, 5.3 L, and 6.0 L.

  5. Remove the engine wiring harness/auxiliary negative battery cable bolt.
  6. Remove the auxiliary negative battery cable.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 662418  Size: SH

    Important: Install the engine wiring harness ground terminal on top of and inboard of the auxiliary negative battery cable ground crimp.

  1. Install the auxiliary negative battery cable.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the engine wiring harness/auxiliary negative battery cable bolt.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the engine wiring harness/auxiliary negative battery cable bolt to 16 N·m (12 lb ft).

  5. Install the engine sight shield. Refer to Upper Intake Manifold Sight Shield Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 4.8 L, 5.3 L, and 6.0 L.

  7. Install the auxiliary battery cable clips to the studs at the front of dash.
  8. Connect the auxiliary negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .

Auxiliary Battery Negative Cable Replacement 6.6 L Engine

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the auxiliary negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  2. Remove the auxiliary battery cable clips from the fender wheel house inner panel.
  3. Remove the cable for the auxiliary battery cables on the frame.
  4. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

  6. Remove the auxiliary negative battery cable bolt.

  7. Object Number: 673568  Size: SH
  8. Remove the nut holding the battery cable retainer to the oil pan.
  9. Remove the auxiliary battery cables from the retainer.

  10. Object Number: 674619  Size: SH
  11. Remove the positive battery cable nut at the starter motor.
  12. Remove the auxiliary battery cable assembly from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Position the auxiliary battery cable assembly to the starter.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.   3. Install the positive battery cable and nut to the starter.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the positive battery cable nut to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

  5. Install the auxiliary battery cables in the retainer.
  6. Install the retainer and nut to the oil pan.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the battery cable retainer nut to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  8. Install the auxiliary negative battery cable bolt.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the auxiliary negative battery cable bolt to 34 N·m (25 lb ft).

  10. Install the auxiliary positive battery cable and nut to the battery.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the auxiliary positive battery cable nut to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  12. Connect the auxiliary negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
