CAMPAIGN:TRANSMISSION FAILURE

SUBJECT: BROKEN FOURTH CLUTCH HOUSING BOLT

MODEL & YEAR: 1995 C/K TRUCKS & G-VANS WITH 4L80E AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

IMPORTANT

RETAIN THIS ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE WITH DEALER CAMPAIGN BULLETINS. A RED TOP BULLETIN WILL NOT BE PROVIDED

GENERAL MOTORS HAS DETERMINED THAT CERTAIN 1995 CHEVROLET C/K TRUCKS OR G-VANS EQUIPPED WITH A 4L80E AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION MAY FAIL TO SHIFT INTO FOURTH GEAR DUE TO A CRACKED OR BROKEN FOURTH CLUTCH HOUSING BOLT. THE FOURTH CLUTCH HOUSING BOLT IS HOLLOW AND IS USED IN THE HYDRAULIC CIRCUIT.

VEHICLE INVOLVED

ALL VEHICLES INVOLVED IN THIS CAMPAIGN WERE PLACED ON STOP DELIVERY/SALE STATUS ON 11/3/94 REFER TO ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE 02-499. THEY ARE ALSO LISTED AT THE END OF THIS MESSAGE. ONCE THE CAMPAIGN SERVICE PROCEDURE HAS BEEN COMPLETED, THE VEHICLE MAY BE RELEASED FOR SALE/DELIVERY.

OWNER NOTIFICATION

ALL VEHICLES INVOLVED WERE STOPPED PRIOR TO DELIVERY TO CUSTOMERS. THEREFORE, THERE WILL BE NO OWNER NOTIFICATION FROM CHEVROLET. IF A VEHICLE WAS SOLD OR DELIVERED TO A CUSTOMER, THE DEALER SHOULD CONTACT THE OWNER AND MAKE ARRANGEMENTS TO PERFORM THE CAMPAIGN SERVICE PROCEDURE.

DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY

ALL NEW INVOLVED VEHICLES IN DEALER'S POSSESSION MUST BE REPAIRED PER THE SERVICE PROCEDURE BEFORE THE VEHICLES ARE SOLD OR DELIVERED. DEALERS ARE TO SERVICE ALL VEHICLES SUBJECT TO THIS CAMPAIGN AT NO CHARGE TO OWNERS, REGARDLESS OF MILEAGE, AGE OF VEHICLE, OR OWNERSHIP, FROM THIS TIME FORWARD.

IN SUMMARY, WHENEVER A VEHICLE SUBJECT TO THIS CAMPAIGN ENTERS YOUR VEHICLE INVENTORY, OR IS IN YOUR DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE, PLEASE TAKE THE STEPS NECESSARY TO BE SURE THE CAMPAIGN CORRECTION HAS BEEN COMPLETED.

PARTS INFORMATION

PARTS REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THIS CAMPAIGN ARE TO BE OBTAINED FROM GENERAL MOTORS SERVICE PARTS OPERATIONS (GMSPO). TO ENSURE THESE PARTS WILL BE OBTAINED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE THEY SHOULD BE ORDERED FROM GMSPO ON A "C.I.O." ORDER WITH NO SPECIAL INSTRUCTION CODE, BUT ON AN ADVISE CODE (2).

SERVICE PROCEDURE

THIS SERVICE PROCEDURE IS TO REPLACE THE 4TH CLUTCH HOUSING BOLT SHOWN ON PAGE 7A-17B-12, FIGURE 24, ITEM #26 IN THE 1994 C/K UNIT REPAIR MANUAL:

1. RAISE THE VEHICLE AND SUPPORT IT WITH SAFETY STANDS.

2. PLACE A DRAIN PAN UNDER THE TRANSMISSION OIL PAN.

3. REMOVE THE SEVENTEEN OIL PAN BOLTS FROM FRONT AND SIDES ONLY AT FIRST TO DRAIN THE OIL. (USE A 10 MM SOCKET. LOOSEN THE REAR OIL PAN BOLTS APPROXIMATELY 4 TURNS).

4. LIGHTLY TAP THE OIL PAN WITH A RUBBER MALLET OR PRY DOWN TO ALLOW THE FLUID TO DRAIN.

5. REMOVE THE REMAINING OIL PAN BOLTS, OIL PAN, AND GASKET (WHICH MAY BE REUSED).

6. REMOVE THE OIL FILTER AND MULTILIP SEAL (THE SEAL MAY BE STUCK IN THE CASE.)

7. DISCONNECT THE WIRE HARNESS ASSEMBLY FROM THE FIVE HOOKUPS.

8. REMOVE THE SIX BOLTS USING AN 8MM SOCKET, FROM THE PRESSURE MANIFOLD ASSEMBLY. (BE CERTAIN THE FIVE O-RINGS ARE ATTACHED TO THE PRESSURE MANIFOLD ASSEMBLY.

9. REMOVE THE TWENTY-ONE BOLTS FROM THE VALVE BODY ASSEMBLY AND MANUAL DETENT SPRING ASSEMBLY.

10. REMOVE THE FLUID LEVEL INDICATOR STOP, THE LUBE PIPE RETAINER, THE LUBE PIPE AND CLAMP.

11. REMOVE THE CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY INCLUDING THE ACCUMULATOR HOUSING ASSEMBLY, VALVE BODY GASKETS, SPACER PLATE, AND ACCUMULATOR GASKET, (MAKE SURE THERE IS NO GASKET MATERIAL LEFT ON THE CASE SURFACE).

12. REMOVE THE EIGHT CHECK BALLS FROM THE SPACER PLATE NOTING THE LOCATIONS.

13. REMOVE THE FOURTH CLUTCH CASE BOLT. IF THE FOURTH CLUTCH CASE BOLT IS BROKEN OR BREAKS DURING REMOVAL, REMOVE THE REMAINING PIECE OF BOLT WITH A SCREW EXTRACTOR.

14. INSTALL THE NEW FOURTH CLUTCH CASE BOLT AND TIGHTEN TO 23 NM (17 LB. FT.). DO NOT OVER TORQUE.

15. INSTALL THE EIGHT CHECK BALLS IN THE PROPER LOCATION IN THE CASE FLUID PASSAGES USING TRANSJEL J-36850 OR EQUIVALENT TO HOLD THEM IN PLACE.

16. INSTALL A NEW VALVE BODY TO CASE GASKET INTO THE VALVE BODY ASSEMBLY.

17. INSTALL THE COMPLETE VALVE BODY ASSEMBLY ONTO THE CASE USING SEVERAL BOLTS TO HOLD IT IN PLACE. (MAKE SURE TO ATTACH THE MANUAL SHAFT TO THE DETENT LEVER AND PIN ASSEMBLY).

18. INSTALL THE PRESSURE SWITCH MANIFOLD WITH O-RINGS ONTO THE VALVE BODY ASSEMBLY.

19. INSTALL THE FLUID INDICATOR STOP, THE LUBE PIPE AND CLAMP AND THE MANUAL DETENT SPRING ASSEMBLY.

20. INSTALL THE REMAINING VALVE BODY BOLTS.

21. TIGHTEN ALL VALVE BODY AND PRESSURE SWITCH MANIFOLD BOLTS TO 11 NM (97 LB-IN).

22. CONNECT THE WIRE HARNESS ASSEMBLY TO THE FIVE HOOKUPS.

23. INSTALL THE OIL FILTER AND MULTILIP SEAL.

24. INSTALL THE TRANSMISSION OIL PAN SEAL (REUSABLE) AND OIL PAN. TIGHTEN THE TRANSMISSION OIL PAN BOLTS TO 24 NM (18 LB-FT).

25. FILL THE TRANSMISSION TO THE PROPER LEVEL WITH DEXRON III TRANSMISSION FLUID. DO NOT OVERFILL.

26. CHECK THE OIL PAN GASKET FOR LEAKS.

27. INSTALL CAMPAIGN LABEL.

CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL

EACH VEHICLE CORRECTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE INSTRUCTIONS OUTLINED IN THIS PRODUCT CAMPAIGN BULLETIN WILL REQUIRE A "CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL". EACH LABEL PROVIDES A SPACE TO INCLUDE THE CAMPAIGN NUMBER AND THE FIVE (5) DIGIT DEALER CODE OF THE DEALER PERFORMING THE CAMPAIGN SERVICE. THIS INFORMATION MAY BE INSERTED WITH A TYPEWRITER OR A BALL POINT PEN.

EACH "CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL, IS TO BE LOCATED ON THE RADIATOR CORE SUPPORT IN AN AREA WHICH WILL BE VISIBLE WHEN THE VEHICLE IS BROUGHT IN FOR PERIODIC SERVICING BY THE OWNER. ADDITIONAL "CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABELS" CAN BE OBTAINED FROM DAC.

APPLY "CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL" ONLY ON A CLEAN, DRY SURFACE.

** THE "PARTS ALLOWANCE" SHOULD BE THE SUM OF THE CURRENT GMSPO DEALER NET PRICE PLUS 40% OF ALL PARTS REQUIRED FOR THE REPAIR. TRANSMISSION FLUID SHOULD BE ENTERED IN NET AMOUNT AT DEALER COST PLUS 40%.
